Bush pardons eight, including convicted bootlegger

WASHINGTON - President Bush has acted to pardon eight people, including a man convicted of bootlegging 45 years ago.

It's the first round of clemency orders in the president's second term -- and brings his total since taking office to 39 pardons and sentence commutations.

Those pardoned include three men from Texas, and one each from New York, Florida, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Their offenses range from misusing mortgage funds to theft of government property. The bootlegger, Charles Russell Cooper of Corpus Christi, Texas, was given three years' probation.

By historical standards, Bush has issued relatively few pardons. Most presidents issue hundreds. Bill Clinton gave out 456, including 176 on his last day as president.

Franklin Roosevelt issued the most pardons -- more than three-thousand during his four terms. Only two presidents never pardoned anyone -- James Garfield and William Henry Harrison.

It helps if you can live long enough to issue a pardon.

And why did bootlegging happen? Because alcohol was illegal. Somehow the drug warriors don't understand this simple economic concept.

Which included a pardon of the FALN, which put the lives of millions of people at risk, and still are at risk, all so his psychotic wife could play Senator in a state she is never in. And if the FALN terrorize again to add to their already 130 bombings, guess who will get the blame? That`s right, GW. 130 bombings and they do 15 years, and Ted Kazinski did how many again? Maybe 7? 10? And he is doing 4 life terms. What Hitlery wants, Hitlery gets.

I was talking about mafia level bootlegging during Prohibition, but thanks for showcasing your math skills for us. ;-)

Because NASCAR had not been invented yet.

"Most presidents issue hundreds. Bill Clinton gave out 456, including 176 on his last day as president. "

The word is "sold," not "gave!" Someday, I hope to see a long list of connection between Saddam Huesein, Iraqi oil voucher/food-for-oil money, oil money beneficiaries and Clinton pardon recipients. So far, we have Marc Rich; I believe there'll be many other.

not to mention rampant crime, the rise of the mob, violence, loss of morality and civility, gangs in the streets.

It's best said here:

Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible.
-CA Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Yup, and the drug warriors don't get it.

Don't go there unless you also check out Bush Sr.'s pardons, including a large-scale drug dealer and a known terrorist who bombed an airliner.

"1960, or about thirty years after prohibition was over."

Producing liquor clandestinely to avoid taxation is bootlegging. While liquor is "legal," basically anything produced except for personal use is taxable, and personal use quantities are restricted.
