Attorney says father of her unborn child is 14-year-old

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) -- A pregnant 34-year-old woman acknowledged having sex with a 14-year-old boy when she pleaded guilty to a single count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

In exchange for her plea, entered Monday, two similar charges were dropped against Stephanie Elizabeth Bissell, of Spring Lake, Mich. The prosecution declined to say who fathered the woman's unborn child, but her attorney said outside the courtroom it was the boy.

During a hearing at Ottawa County Circuit Court, Judge Ed Post asked Bissell: "Did you have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old boy?"

"Yes, your honor," she replied.

Her sentencing hearing was delayed until June 20 because she is six months pregnant and due to give birth May 25. Under the plea deal, the dismissed charges will be considered for sentencing purposes.

Bissell faces up to 15 years in prison. She also will be placed on the statewide sex offenders registration list for the next 25 years.

The victim I rarely hear about in these stories are the husbands of the offending women.  It has GOT to be completely devastating to have this happen.

Not only has your wife cheated on you, it's with a child and is reported nationwide.  Just to face anyone at all has got to be next to impossible.

I remember seeing the Lefavre story and thinking about if I were in that situation.  How can you handle it?  How can you face your friends?  Co-workers?  Family?

I know people will say "he's got nothing to be ashamed of, she's the guilty one".  And, yes, that is true, but the total humility of it has got to be unbearable.  Not only do you have grief, shock and pain that would accompany adultery, but her name is plastered everywhere and she is branded a sex offender, a pedophile.

I mean really. What is going on?

No normal, healthy mature female would be sexually drawn to a 12 year old unless 1) she believe herself to be his peer, seeing herself as much more immature than she really is, or 2) she believes the boy to be her peer, seeing him as way more mature than he really is. I lean toward believing the latter in these cases, but who knows?

As a culture we sexualize children at younger and younger ages, and I think we are now bearing the fruit.
