President Bush is reportedly furious after being betrayed by author Doug Wead, who tape-recorded their private phone conversations, then played the tapes, first for his publisher, then for the New York Times.
"Dubya's become a Burning Bush over it," reports the New York Post's Cindy Adams. "And rightly so. With pals like Friend Wead, who needs enemies?"
-snip-
"Around publishing water coolers it's being whispered and rewhispered that Friend Wead played them for his publisher as a marketing tool," the Post columnist reports. "Marketing for himself, that is."
It was Wead's "financial ploy," she says. "The tapes are what got Friend Wead an extra few quid in his contract."

Mark did not offer up any softball questions either.
He hit Wead with some tough questions...and realities.
Wead tried to play himself as a guy have a rough couple of days....hoping for sympathy I guess.
Well, he did not find it. After Mark's tough questions...callers phoned into the show and hammered Wead. Nobody is buying Weads excuses.
Isn't it illegal to ape a phone conversation without the permission of both parties? (Excepting court-approved wire-taps, of course...)
ape = tape, of course.
I believe Wead has cancelled his other Screaming Face appearances.
He says he did it in states where consent was not needed by the party being taped.
Still, just the snippets I heard make Bush sound in private just like he does in public. I think that's why the MSM hasn't made a bigger deal out of the tapes - they help Bush. I especially liked the story about his dad being disappointed in him and when he said he wouldn't discriminate. Who can argue with stuff like that? But I hope this guy's book is a big flop!
Isn't this the man who was fired from a White House position by GHWB in the summer of 1990? Then he ran for Congress in AZ in 1992 and lost, after BMG endorsed his Democrat opponent, Karan English.
Bush couldn't care less.
I'd be really p*ssed of if I was the Prez....isnt it true that it is illegal to phone tape someone without their permission....I would have him busted....well not the prez, but whatever agency handles that.....the prez should steer clear of any entanglements....
I suspect that Doub Wead shouldn't hold his breath waiting for the next White House Christmas Card...
Hopefully Mr. Wead meets with an untimely and very painful demise and maybe it would serve notice to others not to be so stupid.
WEll that is how bill clinton would have handled it.
we use to call someone like that a D*ck Weed. sort of fits don't it...
Doug Wead - well known as an Amway motivational speaker.
Amway, another endeavor where one uses one's friends to their detriment -- so one can make money for one's self.
I guess Wead just "upped" the ante.
It depends on the jurisdiction.
You got it. Bush is more and more like Teflon Ron. This incident went no where with the MSM and bounced off Bush from the get go. He moved on days ago.
Doug Wead and Linda Tripp... morally equivalent?
The MSM should either give Wead the Linda Tripp treatment...or give her the biggest apology on the planet.
Ah Cindy, did you pick up this little tidbit while traveling recently in Brussels or Mainz?
Wead's an opportunistic scumbag.
Most states only require that one party know. Never discuss anything on the phone you wouldn't discuss on national TV.
What a dark person this guy turned out to be. Was he some minister?
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets all the tapes stolen and that then the ones that could be embarrasing start to pop up for political gain.
Laura Ingraham calls him Richard Wead.LOL
A state by state decision. NJ allows you to tape without someones knowledge, Pennsylvania does not.
With friends like Wead, one does not need enemies.
Damn straight; as if anybody in this administration would speak to her.
By the way, Weed was booked for Hardball tonight, he cancelled. I take it he is feeling the heat.
I would be angry as well. Mr. Prez, it just goes to show that we have to be even more careful picking our friends than we thought.
As for Doug Wead, I am quite disappointed in him. I first became familiar with him in the 1980's and always thought him a fine Christian. At least he could call the President and apologize for the offense.
No, I think the usual rule is that it's okay to tape your own phone conversations w/o the other caller's permission, but you can't tape third party calls without one or both party's permission.
IOW, I can record my own phone calls because they're mine. I can't record my neighbor's calls unless my neighbor authorizes me (in which case, my neighbor is essentially recording his own calls through my agency.)
"Well that is how bill clinton would have handled it."
This would be beneath W, of course, but I'll bet a Texacide makes an Arkancide look like a tea party.
"Bush couldn't care less.
You got it."
He wouldn't be human if he wasn't furious, and I don't believe for a second he isn't extremely p.o'ed. How he feels and how the public image of how he feels is portrayed are two completely different things. He will never mention this in public unless it is to make a joke.
Wead should sign on for a book tour with Jose Canseco. They are both dopes looking to make a buck at someone elses expense.
Linda Tripp taped to cover herself in case of Arkancide: hers or Lewinsky's. Wead taped to cover someone else in garbage. If he was such a friend he would not have released the section about Bush smoking pot. It's not only betraying a trust, it's irresponsible as an adult considering Bush's position as President and his concern for the influence on today's youth.
The President should be angry.
Wead needs to be shunned!
"
Oh Mr. Wead, "the IRS is on the other line...something about an audit?""
Unlike the numerous Clinton political audits, the media WOULD immediately notice and report an audit of Wead.
I don't like a president that uses the IRS for petty revenge.
"It's not only betraying a trust, it's irresponsible as an adult considering Bush's position as President and his concern for the influence on today's youth."
I agree, but it is very curious he kept these tapes under wraps until the election was over. Apparently his motive was more his own profit/benefit and not political.
Another Clymer rears it's ugly head
not saying he would...but why would anyone be that dumb to reveal that they had tapes of the POTUS...duhhhhh...especially while they were still alive much less STILL IN OFFICE! LMAO
I mean look at what happened while Nixon was in office and he apparently didn't know about the "dirty tricks" being done by his staff!
WeaselWeed cancelled Hannity too. BOO HOO NOT
Kristen nosoBreitweisser also comes to mind.
He will get one if he donated just like everyone else. No one should feel special for getting a card unless it sports an original signature.
I think it is a huge betrayal of trust. That said, I think anyone running for the Presidency should assume that nothing is private with anyone. That way you can't get caught at anything.
On the discrimination thing, I find it unnerving that he does not weigh character when he is making appointment decisions. In fact, I would bet that bad morals in other areas would disqualify someone. The fact that homosexuality doesn't saddens me. I'm not surprised though. He has been clear about that in public too.
Entirely within the perview of state law, so it's dependent on where it was done and by whom.
I had heard that he ran for congress in AZ as well.
It seems it may not be that simple.
For one thing....Bush was traveling around and some phone calls were placed in other states.
Then there is the fact that Wead told the Times that he made the recordings for a possible future biography book.
BIG PROBLEM- He had not been commissioned to write anything. He made the recordings with the intent of making money....under false pretense.
That could play a heavy issue.
Which may be why Wead is now saying he is going to give allt he tapes to Bush.
Word is now...that Jose Conseco is considering taking a lie detector test...on....and get this....pay preview!
Neither do I. But I can't see W doing that.
This one really wasn't bad although that is because he is who he is.
Right!
