Cool.

I wonder how crashworthy it is, though.

Volkswagen already sells Europeans a 78-mpg, four-seat nonhybrid subcompact and plans a two-seat city car for 2003 that will get 235 mpg

Well, my uncle, Roy Bob, he invented this pill that you put in your fuel tank and it gives you 478 miles per gallon of water. They was s'posed to come out with it in 1978, but the gov'mint knew that would throw the econ'my into a nosedive so they just put the ki-bosh on it....

This little buggie is kinda cute, but I have images in my mind of giant SUV's crashing it to pieces. Americans are addicted to gas guzzling SUV's as symbols of wealth and quiet power. We roar up and back to our daily appointments chatting away on cell phones with our radios blaring. It's too dangerous out there, Lori. Way too risky.

I'm not sure that my BMY R69-S mototrcycle had that fuel economy! Then again, times change, riding a bike versus ... driving a Beemer 325i (heaven). Next on the list of toys is a Beemer, Mini Cooper-S! Drove one about two years ago. Even the DEALER told me to get on it.! The Mini S is better than...

Of course we need an H2 for composite purposes.

@ 280 MPG, it could almost be a disposable car... could anyone imagine that? Similar to the disposable cameras (which are recycled after their developed), a car could just be traded in when it needed filling up...

two-passenger

Where does that leave conservatives who believe in having families?? Just try strapping a 6 mo baby to a skate board and dragging him behind this awesome energy efficient car, the activists would go nuts...DUH!

You did notice that this vehicle was promised for 2003 right? I'd say the article's credibility ends right about there.

Looks like it was designed for Mini Me. God help a full sized person trying to squeeze into that thing, let alone a "person of size".

Which reminds me; they didn't state the payload, did they?

It is a plot by the American Chiropractic Association, to drum up business.

Tire chains; bag of sand; shovel; 1 gal gas can; 'survival kit'; extra jacket; oops--no more room for driver, let alone a passenger.

It appears that these new skateboards won't be a hit with the average FR (FreeRedzone) knuckle-dragger until they enter one in a Nascar race (with a hemi).

This car would be very fashionable for cruising from a Save the Whales rally to a MoveOn meeting...with a stop in between at the latte shop, of course.

Detroit needs to get their collective heads out of their collective A@@es and get on the stick.

Get the technology out on the market - don't moth-ball it on the shelf.

if you can't haul plywood in it, it's not a real car.

I've got a bonneville and it is small and cramped inside. So I gave that to the wife and bought a good minivan. Lots and lots of room as I drive to work alone.

We've got a big country we should have big cars.

Volkswagen TDI's have been equal or outperforming hybrids for years... I'm not suprised they are ahead of the pack. Hybrid is a dead end technologically.

IF and its a big IF, VW has the guts to put it into production, the market will determine whether it is a success.

Many folks here will not buy one; some will, especially as the future world market brings more petroleum powered cars into play. I think it is wise for the auto industry to look ahead when India and China will be competing with us for oil (See several articles posted today)

I don't think this can or should be a production car, but I do think that more efficient diesel cars are the way to go in the short run. I am not convinced hybrids are any better.
