The U.S. military is to beam its own news coverage to millions of Americans.
Moving on from its phase of embedding journalists, or as some would say, 'a policy of restricting and contolling the flow of information,' the Pentagon will now produce and disseminate the news itself. It will be beamed to the public at no charge. The service will emanate from what is known as the Pentagon Channel, an internal public relations television unit within the Department of Defense. It was set up nine months ago.
The government-run TV service will be channeled to the public through EchoStar Communication's Dish Network which will offer the Pentagon Channel to its more than 11 million viewers on a no-cost basis. Programming will appear on the network's public interest channels and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Dish viewers will be kept up to date with current military news and information including Department of Defense news briefings, military news, interviews with top defense officials, and short stories about the work of military people.
'We appreciate Dish Network's decision to carry the new Pentagon Channel on their satellite TV system,' said Defense Department spokesman Larry Di Rita. 'Their support helps us fulfill our mission of providing timely military news and information.'
Can't wait to check it out.
Oh great, a propaganda channel!
What's the difference between this and NPR?
Exactly! I was just thinking that! The debate is going to be great and perhaps this will be the end of both NPR AND PBS! Both of which are liberal propaganda machines, well when you consider all things.
They should have gone with DirecTV, which I have, because Rupert Murdoch of Fox News fame, owns it....
Oh, well, those of you who will get to see it, let us know how it is and what it on it, ok?
This is such good news. And the libs better just shut their traps--we've put up with "Link" and other liberal/gay channels for years. Some of the "public interest" channels, in fact, should be in the "adult" section--once stumbled on a lesbian "talk show" on I think "Link" and I was stunned at how specific they got. Ug.
I have cable so I guess I won't be seeing it.
When the gun is put to your head forcing you to watch, that would be a problem. Though until then....
Besides, with Link, Free Speech TV, PBS, and others on the "public interest" free section, there's plenty of propaganda already--and if that fails, there's the networks. This channel can perhaps balance things out a little.
The big difference back then was that most of the big media was on America's side at the time.
It looks like FOX News has finally got some competition.
I think they should have military teams play paint ball against liberal teams.
I hope we are able to get it on DirectTV.
DirectTV has a Military channel, but don't believe its from the Pentagon.
no, put they are putting a gun to your head and forcing you to pay for it
the Military channel use to be know as Discovery Times, thats NYTimes, good programming though
We'll see if they report events honestly enough to garner any credibility. Frankly, I'm not too optimistic...
Mmmm I not quite sure because the Discovery Times is a separate channel on Direct TV.
Military channel says (MILT) in the upper ledger.
I agreed programming in Discovery Times is good also.
Pretty sure its the same as just before the New Year they were touting the change over
You could be correct. Don't watch much TV. Always surprised when a new channel suddenly is added during my channel surfing.
You mean Comcast won't have it? :-(
I just sent an e-mail to my cable company, and included an excerpt of the article and the link.
I think if a lot of customers would do this, more cable and satellite networks would decide to carry it.
Write to DirecTV and ask them to carry it and be sure to tell them, that their competitor, EchoStar is carrying it and you consider switching.
The lesser of evils, I guess.
I already have the Pentagon Channel on DISH network. It has been available about a month now. Interesting to watch.
I will. I have Time Warner Cable.
Hmm. What's this? Maybe they will have polls now and then. What was your favorite invasion plan of the 20th century? Should Iran be neutralized this year or wait until they attack Israel? Polls like that.
The Pentagon has the right to broadcast. People can determine whether it is propaganda or useful information. The free market at work.
I don't see how we can keep necessary secrets secret by constantly making everything public. We're elevating public knowledge above public defense.
The Pentagon Channel is quite interesting. I got to see it for over a week when I was visiting my best friend in Germany (her husband's in the army). It was a welcome relief from the BBC channel! A nice way to obtain positive stories about the military without the negative spin that the MSM likes to include with every story.
That's a darn good idea.
Don't forget about that General that raised all the liberals hackles by saying he liked to brawl! He'd be an awesome commentator!

Streaming 24 hours a day
For Instance: Up Armored Vehicles...
Military officials say by next week
every vehicle that leaves its base in
Iraq will be wearing armor
I have a dial up modem and works ok.

The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.
The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.
Sign me up Bump!
You are confused. You meant that it used to be Discovery Wings. Discovery Times is on another channel.
Like PBS?
I'd love to see a show with those night-vision films of them blowing up ammo dumps and so on. That film from Afghanistan (2002?) of the Toyota pick-up truck pulling to a stop in the road, all those little dots of people running into it, and then just as the last straggler jumps in the back...BLAMMO! LOL man that is the greatest minute of video ever produced!
Good. I'd like to hear what they actually say instead of what the news media says they said.
How do we find them?
