Gay rebels marry in Philippines

Mon Feb 7, 2005 5:27 AM GMT

MANILA (Reuters) - Two communist rebels in the Philippines truly became brothers in arms when the men were married in a jungle camp, a newspaper has reported.

Draped in a red flag with hammer and sickle in gold sequins, they exchanged vows, walked under an archway of assault rifles and were serenaded with revolutionary love songs by a choir of New People's Army comrades.

Ka Andres and Ka Jose, who both use the word for "brother" before their names, each held a bullet during the ceremony on the southern island of Mindanao to show their "commitment to the armed struggle", the Philippine Daily Inquirer said.

"What we have to do now -- with the help of the party -- is to work on our marriage and to be strong while serving the people," said Jose, who at 21 is 33 years younger than Andres.

Homosexuality is a largely taboo topic in the Philippines, with stereotypes of flamboyantly effeminate men reinforced in the media.

The communist movement -- waging a violent insurgency in poor, rural areas since the late 1960s -- has been more progressive, adding same-sex relationships and marriage to its guiding policy in 1998.

Still, Jose and Andres said they ran into the "patriarchal" culture of the Philippines when they decided to marry.

"We conducted painstaking discussions to make comrades understand gay relations and gay rights," Andres said.

The Phillipines are totally in a mess. I guess the Muslims will be more than happy to accomodate these homos.
Being from extreme left, Reuters, the credibility of the impact has to be minimal.

Bullsh!t. I live in the Philippines and homosexuals abound, they're flamboyant in mannerisms and dress. There's no hiding their sexual preferences, it open and flagrant.

"same-sex relationships and marriage to its guiding policy in 1998."

It failed in China. And if things haven't changed recently in Cuba, it's not legal there as well. Of course it falls in line with the Communist "feelings" of equality, but even Communist states can't throw off patriarchal past.

In an ironic turn of events, the Marxist rebels praised their once most-hated enemy, Imelda Marcos, on her taste in shoes.

The jungle is a lonely and dark place...where anything can happen. Juan and Ms. Juan...probably met by a coconut tree...shared receipes on roasted pig...and removed crawly animals from each other. Surely, there will be a movie out of this love affair...to amongst all of the other communist gay lovers out there. Maybe Micheal Moore will even produce a jungle documentary on rebels and love. We can only hope.

When I was in Samar as a teen it was that way too. Their was pealong the man with the floppy ears, the gay boys, the town lawyer, the American who owned all the gas (guerillas killed him later down the road) ect.

What I found humorous was the Men placed in power by Marcos who showed up to weddings with their white barong shirts and all wearing mafia looking shades.

Then my grandfather who got down his guns after curfew and talked about what he would like to do to police.

Then the men seranading us LOL the town doctor and his buddy drunk of their butts.

Affirmative to that. They are called "bakl'aa" in Tagalog, and referred to as the 'third sex'. Their image is flamboyantly effeminate for one clear reason - because that is how they act!

I spent 3-4 months in Baguio City, and observed many of them at the 5 universities in town, as well as working in civilian jobs at US Army base "Camp John Hay" (there's a great steak house there, and a nice little bowling alley, too!)
