Tijuana's hopes ride on plant: Toyota, city have high expectations for truck factory

TIJUANA, MEXICO - Toyota Motor Corp. didn't rely just on the help-wanted section in the newspaper when it was ready to begin staffing the assembly line at its newest factory.

It also plastered fliers on fences and poles and dispatched a sound truck to neighborhoods in southeastern Tijuana and the nearby town of Tecate, its speakers blaring out a recruiting message.

Teamwork, personal responsibility and looking out for the other guy, all things Toyota's system values, are not what the maquiladoras have been all about," said Gordon Hanson, an economist at the University of California, San Diego's Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies. "The challenge Toyota faces is to get the workers to adapt to its ways."

The 700 assembly line jobs probably created a hundred white collar or related jobs that would have paid well if the plant had been located in California. Not to mention the multiplier effects.

That plant would have paid a lot of taxes if Bush's guest worker program had been operative and they could have legally hired 700 laborers currently living and working in California illegally.

The article seems a bit contradictory:

"“The majority of those who ultimately landed positions have no manufacturing experience. … Many of the workers came from electronic assembly jobs at maquiladoras.”

Perhaps the percentages are 55% no experience, and 45% from maquiladoras.

Also, isn't this all GW Bush's fault? He hasn't cut the flow of illegals from Mexico yet, so the most enterprising Mexicans come to the USA.

Just one of those little sacrifices that I will gladly make to keep those illegal immigrants in Mexico. That is what was supposed to happen when we sent all those jobs down there previously. Too bad it didn't work.

So 'rod, you think Toyota opened up shop south of the border because they *might* not be able to find 700 *leeegal* workers in CA ???

I said I wouldnt be buying a Toyota anytime soon.

Maybe now it'll be justifiable to send 700 back --- they've got excellent jobs waiting for them back home after all -- and maybe they can have some kind of health insurance plan back home -- and it won't cost us to educate all their kids.

It is a dumb excuse ---- they can live for $30 or so a week back in Mexico --- which is why the factories pay them that much or a little more. Here they can't live for that little and the taxpayers have to make up the difference. The best thing for them is to go home to those nice jobs they now have. It always amazes me how expensive the cars are that get made in Mexico though --- with those low wages you'd think something could passed onto the consumer.
