Hajj Minister Iyad Bin Amin Madani said last week that the new changes included new emergency exits at the place where the pilgrims throw Jamrat Al-Aqabah.

Nice try. Now they'll stampede and kill in the exits.

Women aren't allowed?

Where'd you get that? My neighbor's wife has told us about tossing the stones at the pillar representing the Devil.

Guess she'd better get her money back eh?!

I stand corrected. It's one of the rare times they are allowed to mix:

Men and women, otherwise not allowed to mix in the conservative kingdom, rubbed shoulders and stretched helping hands to each other as they climbed the uneven but gentle slope. Many already atop pushed and shoved to hug a pillar, standing where Islam's 7th century prophet Muhammad gave his last sermon in the year 632, three months before his death.

The above is from here.

I've read a lot about Islam the past couple of years. I presumed they did the same thing at the Hajj as they do everywhere else.

I still don't understand why they do that.

The black rock (very likely your run-of-the mill meteorite) is believed to have been sent to Abraham (a resident, so they believe, of Mecca) by Allah as a sign from above.

It was worshipped by pre-Islamic Arabs, and the hajj to visit the rock, properly known as the Kaaba stone, pre-dates Muhammad.

We should strip our murders naked, especially the women, and then drop them over the festivities by parachute. The resulting mayhem to avoid becoming unclean during the haj should finish off quite a few of them.

That's not a "big black rock" for one thing. That's the innersanctum of the Great Mosque. It's called the Kaaba (with various spellings).

Part of the Kaaba consists of what seems to be a small grouping of fosil wood and a meteorite or two. This is supposedly Abraham's altar on which he was instructed to sacrifice (Isaac/Ishmael) ~ his son!

The rest of it consists of large black curtains which are let down most of the year to protect the site from the elements.

People have been conducting religious pilgrimages to this spot for thousands of years. In Mohammad's time it was a serious source of revenue for the oasis of Mecca. Thing used to be surrounded by several hundred wooden statues of various "gods" from throughout the world.

Many believe the whole area is underlain with ancient jars that preserve ancient religious texts. The climate is such that anything buried here should last a very long time.
