IBM never did compete with Dell. Dell sells PCs. IBM sells big iron and anything the customer wants along with it. For IBM, the PC was always an accessory.

Historically, we've gone through many situations where a huge corporation was seen as invincible and had a corner on the market only to collapse years later under it's own inability to adapt quickly. I don't know all the particulars for sure, but I don't think the issue is Microsoft forcing OEMs to ship their products, the issue is XP seems to be the only game in town and vendors have little choice. What will happen if within the next 5 years enough people get fed up with XP and switch to Mac or Linux or some other yet to be invented operating system. I switched to Mac a year ago, so I am no longer part of the group that gives money to Microsoft for producing a piece of crap operating system. If enough people switched Microsofts monopoly would collapse.

Microsoft is selling more software then ever in it's history, making more money than ever. Microsoft is the biggest IT company on the planet by market cap, bigger than IBM, bigger than HP. and Microsoft is now one of the most powerful companies on the planet.
Plus Microsoft Windows runs over 90% of all the desktops on the planet, Microsoft Office totally dominates the office suite business etc etc etc.

For now, the open source nuts have been reduced to their normal parasitic role of trying to feed off Microsoft's XBOX by illegally getting Linux to run on the XBOX by using chips that are illegal in the United States.
