Pugilist Pete (MSM Arrogance Alert)

So Peter King is a boxer. We've always known that the Republican congressman from Seaford is combative. Now an entertaining story by Newsday's J. Jioni Palmer reveals that King is throwing literal as well as rhetorical punches. We hope the cardiovascular benefit outweighs the ill effect of too many jolts to the head. In any case, when he disagrees with us in the future, we can simply ascribe his scrambled thinking to pugilistic dementia.

"when he disagrees with us in the future"

Interesting phrase there by Newsday, as if it were the polititians job to agree or disagree with their position on issues!
Newsday has it all backwards ... its the job of the press to agree or disagree with a politicians position on issues, not the other way around ....

...... but not before tossing out a personal attack on King:

"we can simply ascribe his scrambled thinking to pugilistic dementia"

What ARROGANCE, ehhh ???

Long Island's only Republican Congressman is nothing to write home about, or even an article.

I didn’t read the “entertaining story.”

The name doesn’t ring a bell offhand, so I’d say if he’s a boxer he’s an amateur. Could be wrong, I guess… Then again, if he’s a representative he’s probably a little long in the tooth to be a “serious” amateur.

Actually, people don’t believe it but the last stats I remember seeing (’00 or ’01) listed amateur boxing as safer than football, baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, and even tennis, in terms of injuries suffered. Then again there are a lot less people doing it WRT the others, I suppose.

I’d guess that if he’s a “boxer,” he’s doing it for recreational purposes rather than having designs on a “career.”

That pretty-much rules out any sort of “pugilistic dementia” because he isn’t going to be taking any hits of importance.

It shows ignorance on the part of the person writing the article because any reputable gym doesn’t just throw people together to flail away. They’ll match up an inexperienced boxer with a much more experienced partner.

You’re not at a level where you’ll be able to hurt your partner and he’ll be pulling punches so as not to hurt you because you did something dumb.

At any rate, even a moderate recreational amateur boxer should be able to take a reporter from Newsday, IMO.

And yes, the “cardiovascular benefit” will put a semi-serious amateur in the lower-realm of collegiate wrestlers – which is damned impressive, if you’ve ever done that sort of thing.
