For example:
"If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, wed take it right now and walk away winners....Tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her and were pulling for her." -- Dan Rather to President Bill Clinton, via satellite, May 27, 1993.

Wonder if it is in the report this way or if the text just pasted incorrectly during posting.
:) Hi Buckhead...
Come to think of it, she could probably get away with that too.
Rather knows the difference between a political hack with an ax to grind and an unimpeachable source. Doesn't pass the smell test. Me thinks Danny boy is covering for someone who's not part of the story... yet.
Mapes told the Panel that she informed the Burketts that she was worried the documents might be a political dirty trick. Mapes said that the Burketts appeared genuinely shocked at the suggestion and this reaction gave her comfort. She said that she also told Lieutenant Colonel Burkett that she would verify the documents and noted that this seemed to be important to him as well.
I have read a lot..enough to know they said everything but the documents are frauds..No thinking person could read this and believe they were in any way real....
But..I came here to comment because of my outrage over Hackworth's part..We and the media make heroes out of these guys and the media uses them in areas where they do not have the expertise to address what he was addressing..Hackworth's so full of hot air here I could scream. (Yes, I thank him for serving my country but he now serves his own ego.)
Wow..Mapes did not want to hear about the superscript th..or anything to get in the way of her irrational exuberance to change the election mo against Bush.
This report is so long..but it reports much of what we have here on FR about many things..all they have is the inside scoop on CBS goings on..lots of conflicting stories.
The interviews they aired were roundly debunked.
Whole heartedly agree with you regarding Hackworth and others
who are propelled into the MSM limelight as "experts."
Hackworth is acting in a submersive way IMHO.
As people have more time to read this..the true outrageous way this was done by CBS will be written about in depth by serious experts in journalism.
Thanks for the complete report. The evidence proves that Ol' Dan was biased, but the report did not make that conclusion. Thus, Clearly Biased Stories (CBS) has as its anchor Dan "Rather" Biased.

I think that this is why Thornburgh did not definitively conclude that the documents were fakes. He probably was directed to not reach a conclusion on that point, because ther is no ethical reason why a news organization would protect a person who provided false information.
In other words, if Thornburgh stated that the documents were fake, then CBS -- under journalistic ethics (I know, I know) would have no reason not to name the highly-placed person who furnished them.
bump
I need some help.
I've tried to find out if the law firm that Thornburg is associated with (Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham), he is listed "of council" and not a partner, is one
of the law firms that CBS uses.
According to the law firm's profile, it specializes in providing legal advice to TV and Radio Networks.
If K&LNG is one of CBS's law firms, CBS hiring KLNG to do an "independent" investigation of the "60 Minutes" Report on Bush's TxANG activity is reminicent of Enron hiring its law firm, Vinson & Elkins, to do an "independent" investigation of Sharron Watkins' famous memo to Ken Lay that Enron's accounting treatment and public disclosure of certain activity were inappropriate.
As we all now know, the V & E "Independent" Report on Watkin's Memo concluded that Enron did not need to pursue the issue further, but the Justice Department's subsequent investigation led to numerous guilty pleas.
I'm sure V & E and possibly K&LNG were cognizant of the fact that it they torpedoed and sunk one of their largest clients it would not be very good for future business.
I believe that the only way to get to the truth regarding the "60 Minutes" Program is if the Justice Department investigates or one of the individuals libeled by the "60
Minutes" Program or subsequent statements by CBS or its executives files a civil suit.
In the meantime, maybe we can start a campaign to spring "Baghdad Bob" to replace Dan Rather as CBS News Anchor, it would probably increase CBS's credibility

How about Baghdad Zog, aka, John Zogby, the great pollster of 2004 instead of Baghdad Bob.
maybe you want to ping CongressmanBillybob for an answer to that question, Andy.

Bottom line is the Bart Simpson defense: "I didn't do it, no one saw me do it, there's no way you can prove anything!"
Interesting thoughts and I hope someone who knows more about it can help you Andy!
