I think it will be GOPers who wind up blocking Bush's major initiatives.
There are people like Lugar and McCain who are doing everything they can to undermine him in Iraq (might add Lindsay Graham to that).
The entire Buchanan wing of the party won't even discuss options for border security.
And there are a lot who don't want to touch Social Security or permanent tax cuts.
He might get GOP agreement on tort reform, and if that's all he gets, at least it's something.
This is another example of why you must kill your enemies when you defeat them. It shuts them up, it firms up your base, and it brings in all those people who were wavering.
Their purpose is strictly POWER AND CONTROL. They are worthless, other than to themselves. The Repubs continue to give them a free pass with no attacks and no visble hard-core attacks in the conservative media...the libs will live as long as conservatives continue to wimp-out on them.
But the unity of purpose also underscores a hardening of attitudes among Democrats -- from elected officials and strategists to grass-roots activists and party constituencies -- that Bush's domestic agenda presents opportunities to divide the GOP, break apart Bush's winning coalition and recapture some of the voters who supported Bush last fall.
Aside from immigration, there is nothing on his domestic schedule the majority who voted for him are opposed to in principle. S.S. reform, tax reform, tort reform, constitutional judges, etc... all are widely accepted. And, Democrats have no credibility on immigration anymore than the Reps do.
Among GOP elected officials, there may be a divide. People that do not want to buck the status quo and those that live off pork themselves may not be in agreement but the base is. I assume Bush understands this, which is why he's planning to take these reforms to the people much in the way he did his tax cuts. He's going to get the American people to pressure these House and Congress. I still remember the shock and fury when he urged people on the trail to contact their representatives about tax cuts. LOL
Frankly, the Dems are insane. I cannot predict what insanity will drive people to do. If they are still capable of rational thought, they'll bluster in the media but jump on these reforms if the legislation is good and looks to pass. They'll want credit, even if they opposed all along the way. In the same manner they wish to claim welfare reform. "Red" state Dems will have their futures to worry about, and may jump ship.
Clearly the Boxer Rebellion indicates they are still dedicated to kissing up to the Moore base, but they remain self serving politicians so we'll see if their actions mirror their bluster of words in the end.
So NOW they are united huh? What were they last year? They threw everything at Bush and still lost. Sorry 'Rats resistance is futile!
This is too funny. Watching the rats is like watching the energizer bunny run into a brick wall over and over and over and.......
Bush and the Republicans would do best to simply ignore the minority party like parents ignore a tired, cranky child. Maybe a little spanking now and then, and then put them to bed. Seeking "bipartisan cooperation" is a waste of time with those sick animals.
That's great! Another party wide temper tantrum. If they don't want to deal - nuclear option. It's constitutional, and it would benefit our nation for generations to come.
And we all know "bipartisanship" means both parties join together to screw the Republicans.
I hope that Bush has the guts to play hardball, as in making most of the discretionary spending cuts in dem districts, courting Southern dems to continue to switch parties, ansd spanking the donkey for its coziness with a America's enemies.
Democrats are even more of a minority party than they were when Bush was sworn in four years ago...
and they need to be even smaller in 2006.
Now, more than ever, please link to the printer friendly version of the article. This will solve both problems.
"Bush's domestic agenda presents opportunities to divide the GOP, break apart Bush's winning coalition and recapture some of the voters who supported Bush last fall."
Gee, just ignore the needs of the nation while you dance the Sore-Loserman.
Its all about stopping the guy the Left views as Bushitler. Trust me here Freepers and Friends: its gonna be fast, thick, long and ugly. The Democrats are in no mood for a second term honeymoon.
" Then, despite anger and bitterness over how the 2000 election ended, Democrats were tentative and initially open to Bush's calls for bipartisan cooperation."
They did until they realized that he wasn't going to let them run the show like Bush 41 did.
" Then, despite anger and bitterness over how the 2000 election ended, Democrats were tentative and initially open to Bush's calls for bipartisan cooperation."
""Where was I? I missed this one.""
Well, a nanosecond IS a very short amount of time. So you are given a pass, just this once.
This is to be expected. They're Democrats; it what they do.
The real test here is whether the lily-livered members of the Stupid Party are going to sit on their asses and let it all happen for the umpteenth time, or whether they'll finally grow a pair.
Bets, anyone?
"kill your enemies"
Don't you think that's a little strong for an election ..?? I mean I'd like to get rid of a lot of these total bozos, but I think "kill" is a bit much.
They are however, quite entertaining.
But not enough so that I will miss them when they are gone.
