"Natural disasters" do not, of course, include any of the wars. That means all wars, beginning with the most deadly one, World War II. As for the floods, earthquakes, cyclones and other disasters much larger than this one, do the Google search which I suggest in my article.

Any "article" that purports:

"US helicopters were flying tons of water, food and other supplies into areas...", while "a group of white, liberal, American Democrats, led by former Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, held a hush-hush meeting in New York with Kofi Annan..." - when this meeting actully took place on Dec. 5/04 - can hardly be considered a "good" article.

Yes, by post 16, the "author" fessed up. Sort of.

Very shoddy stuff. And given the fact that the UN "took the lead" about an hour ago PST, it's not just shoddy - it's now become entirely moot. (Not to mention it kind of reflects bad on the part of the author - as well as FR.)

I agree. I know it makes me sound cold hearted, and
maybe I am. I'm just tired of watching our money go
overseas to one disaster or another. In a few years,
I'll get to collect whatever is left for social security,
I've worked and paid in for 40 years now. How about our
elected officials think about those of us in this
country before giving (what isn't theirs) to people
who may not use it for what we intended, and certainly
won't appreciate the gift for more than a month or two
until the next problem.

There are a lot more dead than 140,000. That figure is just what they have counted. My estimate has been 500,000 from the beginning. You need to remember than some of these countries don't have a good count to begin with.

"I know it makes me sound cold hearted, and

Several have accused me of being hard hearted etc., but we cannot discard our common sense or our Constitution in foreign aid. The emotionalism being promoted by the left just weakens us and aids some of our enemies. Bandeh Aceh was a terrorist base.

How many vietnamese people were bombed, shot and killed by US army?

Your question seems a little suspicious to me.

If it's actually just a question, I apologize.

However, the number of South Vietnamese people (fighting for their freedom) bombed, shot and otherwise killed by the US Army, Navy and Air Force may number in the tens of thousands.

The number of South Vietnamese people shot, burned, hacked and starved to death by the communist enslavers numbers in the millions.

...a group of white, liberal, American Democrats, led by former Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, held a hush-hush meeting in New York with Kofi Annan. The UN Secretary General was instructed to attend without his aides, for a candid discussion of how to "save" his career and "save" the UN.

This is so typical of the Dem's machinations. They cling to their floating fragments of sinking ships, when perfectly good life rafts are rowing past them.

Is it "ego" that prevents them from "moving on", or is there more to this than meets the eye?

Ego? Perhaps.

You observed: "The tsunami disaster is horrible, at 200,000 deaths. These floods were a natural phenomenon. Saddam Hussein has deliberately murdered at least 500,000 people.

"Still, much of the world clings to the benighted view that the US should have negotiated more with Hussein. . .any competent observer should realize it is as useless to negotiate with a mass murderer, as with a tsunami on its way across an ocean.

"Both will continue on their path until their power dissipates. Both will kill all in their path until that time." These words needed restating for obvious reasons. Thanks!

Cedex: glad to see you've just signed up.

However, if you're going to criticize the author of this thread, make certain you don't use shady methods to try to devalue his article.

If you will re-read, you will see that he did not say the helicopters were delivering aid WHILE (your claim) the secret meeting was being held. What he said was:

"Meantime, a group of white, liberal, American Democrats, led by former Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, held a hush-hush meeting in New York with Kofi Annan."

Most of us knew already that the meeting was held earlier in December, because we saw the interview which revealed it. Besides, "meantime" could mean "the day before," or even, "six months ago."

You see, Ol' Congressman BillyBob is not the uninformed 'hick' his pseudonym might imply to a Northeastern Liberal Elite, or to a defender of one.

Post 34 by loveliberty2 has it right on the button. That is what "Meantime" means, and that is why I used the word. As for the UN running the show, I sincerely hope that the US had the brains to give the UN a cosmetic role.

I am certain that, from prior dust-ups, the US will never put US military people under the command of anyone but another American. My article was published before the UN announcement.

And, of course, there is nothing "moot" about saying that the UN is both dishonest and corrupt. Those are very lively subject, even if you read the New York Times (inside pages next to the pet obituaries).

Your comment reflects poorly on you. Nothing in my article reflects poorly on me or FreeRepublic.

Have a nice day.

What part of europe are you from?

Here are a few of the biggest natural disasters in a list, many with greater numbers of deaths than the recent tsunami.

We may be having a regional problem with semantics, here.

In most dictionaries, and in the north, "meantime," when used as a noun, is the time interval between two events. When used as an adverb, "meantime" refers specifically to "during the interval between two specific events or times."

In the south, on the other hand, "meantime" is frequently applied to the time period before the commencement of a single event. It's a subtle difference, but it can lead to misunderstandings.

I think the way it is written, the use of "meantime" is used as "simultaneously".

This version is used widely all over television, such as: "So Tiger Woods winds up with 4 on #12, and in the meantime Sergio Garcia has hit a beautiful drive on 8, let's look at it"

Thank you for your note. I thank you for your tagline, especially the word "Scoutmaster." I have just turned 62. I've been in various schools and universities for 22 years and counting. Still, one of the greatest positive influences ever is the years I spent in Troop 35. Baltimore, Maryland, lead by Dr. Carl A Zapfee, its Scoutmaster for 41 years.

It is a credit to that gentleman that the Troop 35 graduated almost 250 Eagles during his tenure. So when I even see the word Scoutmaster, at least mentally, I stand straight, bring my heels together, and give the Scout Salute as a mark of respect.

Thank you, sir, for your service.
