Why isn't anyone offended by "Happy New Year"
vanity | 1/4 | Wil H

Posted on 01/04/2005 6:14:44 AM PST by Wil H

Christmas is over - well nearly, it ends tomorrow on Jan 5th (Twelth Night) and this Christmas season we have seen an unprecedented attempt to stamp it out by the secularists and the left wing loonies.

People have been cowered into not saying "Merry Christsmas" for fear of offending minorities who don't celebrate Christmas, so the question I ask is - why is no one offended by "Happy New Year"?

A fifth of the world's population are Chinese -it's not their New Year!

There are more Jews in in New York than in Israel -it's not their New Year either!

If "Merry Christmas" offends, surely "Happy New Year" is equally offensive...

Exactly. What if I'm a pacifist and someone wishes me a good veteran's day weekend? The most insidious thing about the left is not the moral error (which is monumental) but the sheer stupidity to which it has brought us.

Well I guess it's because it doesn't bring a certain religion to mind, therefore it is a secondary target. Once Christian and Jewish references are banned from the public square, the left can attack secondary targets. The American flag ban will be intensified. Birmingham, Alabama will need to be renamed (racial past). All southern states will need new names (racial past). Detroit and LA and Boston need new names. The list is endless.

I'm offended because some people may not be happy this New Year.

Besides, I don't like the word "happy". Perhaps we should change it to "gay".

New Year's Day is not overtly, perhaps. However, the fact that we all agree that New Year's Day (and other days as well) falls at the same time and on the same calendar can be attributed to Pope Gregory, from way back in the late sixteenth century! The calendar that most of us use is the Gregorian one, isn't it?

Good Question: The New Year has Christian religious significance.

Not really. The calendar we presently use is only slightly changed from that of the pagan Romans.

And Jews circumcize baby boys on the eighth day after birth, not the seventh.

Well, I'm offended by all the Christians complaining about not hearing Merry Christmas throughout the season of Advent while they themselves fail to express Merry Christmas during the actual Christmas season. It's been over a week since I heard anyone wish someone else a Merry Christmas.

The fact that we've just inaugurated the New Year 2005 should give the atheo-nazis pause for thought. 2,005 years after what...the 27th year of Augustus?

Granted, they've tried. I see pinheaded secular scholars are all using that "CE" and "BCE" crap to refer to years now, instead of "A.D." and "B.C." But the fact remains: the way most of humanity measures time is centered around God's act of entering human history in the person of His Son, our Lord Jesus the Messiah.

I'm frankly surprised the idiot ACLU malcontents haven't tried to sue to abolish the calendar yet.

I'm with you on that one, I am still wishing people a Merry Christmas and they look at me like I'm a loonie.

Though I did get a wished a merry christmas by someone yesterday, I was quite surprised.

Why does Christmas offend anyone? I fail to understand how anyone can be offended when someone wants to include them in celebrating an event that brings happiness and joy to millions of people around the world.

The Jewish day overlaps the Roman day, as it is presently used, with about six hours of day one and 18 hours of day two. We, of course, do not know when in the day Jesus was born.

This discussion leaves out of consideration two facts:

1. All reasonable scholars are agreed that we do not know the date of Jesus' birth. Most agree that, whenever it was, it is unlikely that it was December 25.

2. The date of the start of the New Year, in the Roman calendar, predates Jesus' birth, and therefore was not set to commemorate any event in his life. You are, of course, free to see any significance you like in what I see as just an interesting coincidence.

It is hardly unprecedented since this attack on anything Christian has been going on for years.

Was there not an existing thread that you might have posted your comment on rather than creating a new thread for a pointless vanity?

Not as frequently but yes they have. Anything to do with God is subject to attack. Christian's are more frequently attacked because we are the oppressive majority.

Posting Guidelines from the FR Welcome/Help page:
(excerpted)
Do keep "vanity" posts to a minimum - Free Republic is primarily a place to discuss news, articles, and editorials. Vanity posts, creations of the poster him or herself, should meet a high standard of quality before one is even considered worthy of posting. Often a relevant current thread or general announcement, catch-all thread is a much better choice for a brief question or comment.
(end of excerpt)

There have been a lot of vanity threads lately, and from what I've seen precious few of them "meet a high standard of quality" that would make them "worthy of posting" as their own threads.

The date of the start of the New Year, in the Roman calendar ...

was not January 1.  December was the tenth month, January the eleventh, and February the 12th.

Good Question: The New Year has Christian religious significance.

Unless you practice some form of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in which case the New Year is celebrated 7 days *before* the birth of Christ.
