Challenge to Tony Blair to sign global poverty pledge
Today, MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY challenged Tony Blair to do much more to tackle global poverty by pledging to change damaging UK policies and press for international action that delivers a real breakthrough. The new report, Make History: A challenge to the British Prime Minister in 2005 was delivered to Downing Street, demanding that Tony Blair sign on the dotted line.
"We are issuing this challenge to Tony Blair as we believe that he must do more to end global poverty. It is time for the UK government to change key policies and put pressure on other world leaders to do the same. At the end of 2005 Blair and the other world leaders will be judged on whether they delivered a breakthrough," said Adrian Lovett from Oxfam on behalf of Make Poverty History.
Make Poverty History, which formally launches on 1 January, is a coalition of UK charities, trade unions, campaigning groups and celebrities, who have come together to demand that rich countries increase aid and make it work better for poor people, cancel world debt and change the rules of world trade so that they favour the interests of the poor. The coalition is part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, a worldwide movement that will come together at key points during 2005.
In 2005 the government has exceptional opportunities to take the lead in the battle against world poverty, as the UK hosts the G8 gathering of world leaders and also heads the European Union. Make Poverty History is planning events throughout the year, including a big demonstration in Edinburgh on 2 July to put pressure on politicians before the G8 meeting.

So if I were to donate to OXFAM to help with SE Asia relief for the disaster there, my money might go to this politically motivated campaign. Hmmm, my money won't go to them!
It's not only obnoxious, but wrong. Poverty is not caused by the lack of money, it is the result of crime. From the common crime of the city streets that impoverish a neighborhood, to the political crimes committed in the capitals of countries that permit whole peoples to starve.
The problem with resolving poverty by eliminating crime would be the overpopulation of the worlds prisons with its criminals. Rich and poor.
When O when will they understand we don't buy it anymore?
Sending tons of money to corrupt, greedy dictatorships to 'cure poverty'? Shiploads of moolah to UN organizations to 'cure poverty'? Bwahahahahahhaaaaa

You do not comprehended the concept. Most of the poor areas of any town are the result of crime. Those who can escape, do so. Those who can't remain. Think about it. Would you invest your money in a business located in a high crime rate area, or would you go to where you, your money and your family are safer. Exactly. The only jobs left where crime is high are poor ones.

Well, Lucy...how do you 'splain the fact that Clinton's HQs are in Harlem? Kinda shoots that theory down when our A-Number One Criminal sets up shop there, LOL!
I don't buy that crime alone is the reason for poverty. It's a combination of factors including lack of motivation, lack of educational opportunities, drug and/or alcohol problems, poor parenting, stupid choices about spending what income you do have, etc. It would be nice to put it in a box and tie it all up with a pretty ribbon, but I don't see it as that easy. And throwing money at poverty when there's NO accountability has never, ever worked.
As for Oxfam...they've always been scammers, and I'm totally losing my faith in sending cash to ANY large, organized aid group. I keep my charitable dollars within my own community these days. If I can help someone closer to home, I'm doing my share. 100 million raised so far to benefit this disaster. I'm waiting 'til later to see what they need after the dust settles, then I'll work through my church to help out. I work for a seed company, so I'm thinking I will find a way to get seed to farmers and home gardeners.
Another reason to stear clear of Oxfam? It's been posted as THE BEST PLACE to send in your donations for this disaster on all the liberal boards. 'Nuf said.

All of the situations you name can be considered criminal. Is the lack of a decent education system and the presence of municipal corruption crimes? Are drugs crime? What else do you call it? Jus' dems dumb bad luck!

Got it. I did't get your point at first. Still don't agree that crime is the SOLE factor in creating poverty, though. To me, it's sort of a "which came first" situation; if there's crime in an area does that cause more poverty, or if there's initially poverty in an area, does it cause more crime? And again, money given with no accountablity just adds to the downward spiral. Sort of a "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." (Well, until PETA finds out about it.)
Anyhow...avoid sending your money to the "poverty prolongers" at Oxfam. And thanks to Hu Gadarn for that great list!
Ideally, people would be more self-sufficient and less government dependent by now, but since the socialists need sheep and sheep need to be lead around by the nose it was a self-fulfilling prophecy creating the cycle of poverty and need and relief, then more need, that we now have. (Which, in this country is GREATLY exagerated, IMHO. I've yet to see any dead bodies in the streets due to starvation or disease for lack of medical care.)

We all know now just how costly those programs have become, and they've continued the cycle of want and need and relief and then more want and more need, ad infinitum.
But, I'm not here to argue LBJ's mis-guided solutions (or any Dimowits mis-guided "feel-good" solutions to practical problems.)
I'm here to tell people to avoid the Oxfam scammers.
Have you read "Do-Gooders" by Monica Charen? It's quite an eye-opener into this whole situation. "Do-Gooders" end up creating more problems for us than they ever solve. For example: Oxfam!
