I had been w/ the owners and their plight so far, but this is a real concession on the part of the players and should cure what the owners have complained about.
I never have been on board with a salary cap. It is artificial and I hate what the NFL has become b/c of it.
Up until now there has been no real serious negotiating. Hopefully they will accept, or at least use it as a starting point for real negotiating. If the owners balk at this proposal, we know they are not negotiating in good faith. They cannot expect to get everything they want.
It is time for the owners to step up to the plate.
To all the hockey bashers - Grow up. I expect more from posters on this site.
I think there should be some type of regulated pay scale for new players entering the league.
IMO, paying someone the type of money that a rookie gets nowadays, before ever skating a single shift in the NHL, is wrong.
A graduated pay scale based on draft selection and including, in some form, second year players, is a step in the right direction.
It looked as if that was part of the proposed agreement. I think the proposal might have taken the owners by surprise so it might take a couple days before there is any indication.
I have aleady written off this season. I just want something that works for both that doesn't include a Salary Cap.
Associated Press
A look at key points of NHL Players' Association six-year proposal to the NHL:
Salary rollback
Immediately cuts 24 percent off all existing contracts. NHLPA says that will save teams $270 million in the first year and $528 million over three years. The previous offer of Sept. 9 offered a 5 percent rollback.
Salary restraints
Would restrict rookie contracts to $850,000 a year for three years, down from last season's $1.2 million level. There would also be reductions in qualifying offers to restricted free agents, and would give clubs the chance to elect arbitration in a system similar to one used in baseball. The union estimates clubs will save $400 million over the next six years and reduce the aggregate qualifying offers due to restricted free agents by $285 million over three years.
Luxury tax
Would penalize teams 20 cents for each dollar they spend between $45 million and $50 million. The penalty would increase to 25 percent the second year and 30 percent in the third. Teams spending between $50 million and $60 million would be taxed 50 cents on the dollar the first year, 55 cents the second year and 60 cents the third. Those with payrolls above that would have to pay 60 cents for every dollar the first year, 65 cents the second and 70 cents the third year on each dollar over the threshold. Includes a revenue-sharing plan to bring the bottom 15 teams within 30 percent of the revenues of the top 15 teams.
Joint player-club committees
Committees would be designed to ensure improvements in the game, its marketing and its revenues. The players proposed to play in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
If that's a real shirt, then I'm buying one.
Not since Ron Mason left his coaching job to be the AD. He's a good AD, but I miss him as coach.
Let's hope this proposal works!!
Drop the damn puck !!! :-)
Re: The Hockey Bashers.........
Amazing, isn't it, that some people have the compulsion to write something, even when it isn't informative or productive?
They must be very lonely, or desperately in need of attention. How sad........
I don't like Golf. I think it is the most boring waste of time ever invented by mankind. However, if I see a post about Golf, I simply pass over it or ignore it.
May I suggest that the Ice Hockey bashers do the same!!
Sorry, I'm a little late on this one (finishing up my Christmas shopping this weekend), but I have to agree with you whole heartedly. I've never understood the people who take the time to post on threads they have no interest in at all and just bash whatever the thread is about. Maybe they are closet DU'ers who hate all sports. LOL
Actually, DU'ers don't just hate sports. They hate everything!! :-) How sad.
