I believe the first move will be a surprize attack by Israel against Iran. Syria will respond, of course, perhaps using Iraq's WMD to attack Israel (possibly through Lebanon?), and Bush will have no choice but to then invade Syria.

Yes. IMO, very likely.

Presidnt Bush's (hinted, but not stated) ME policy is to bring government, law, and order to that entire region of fire ants, something the colonial era failed to do. For some strange reason, I give this strategy a better than 50% chance of success.

Thanks for these illuminating and humorous comments. Our plans for liberating that whole theater of the world are safe behind yours and the rest of the "Our Gang"'s cast of characters.
That whole business about invading here and there is hilarious. Really loved your "Let's take a look at the Map" thing.

My son is in the Marine Corps serving on the Syria/Iraq border. His platoon is mortared daily from Syria. Unfortunately the Syrian government claims no knowledge of who might be responsible. This has been going on for months.

they're both tough nuts to crack logistically, but Syria offers the advantage of opening supply lines to the Med - that alone saves about 10,000 miles on sea transport. The main Syrian port is named Latakia, iirc... and is north of the bekaa & surrounding mountains (less worry about guerilla groups).

followup on my first response: here's a relief map of Syria/Lebanon/Iraq area. YOu can see the terrain around the coast has some ranges, but at 18 miles roughly fm the port, they would be a good defensive position around the beachhead. After that it's "tank country" - the syrians wouldn't last three days.

Syria is a cakewalk

Its an absolute travesty that "military intelligence" wasn't on top of this over a year ago!

Weve been in there for 21 months - heavy insurgent activity for at least 16 of those - and we're just getting a clue where its coming from?

Josef Bodansky has written a book, published in August 2003, entitled "The Secret Iraq War" that accuses both Iran and Syria of providing insurgents and weapons to destabalize Iraq.

Our intelligence services are woefully weak and inept. The shakeup is long overdue - but it will be a long time before they are operating with the required level of performance.

"U.S. military intelligence has concluded the Iraqi insurgency is being directed to a greater degree than previously thought from Syria"
===

Give US 'intelligence' another two years in the ME and they might find some arabs in syria too.

Only 12 months late to reach the conclusion we all knew already. What geniuses!

Warm up the B-2s, then the B-1s and finally the B-52s. (In order of decreasing ability to penetrate defenses, as the defenses are rolled back)
