History is filled with incidents of the political branch of government unilaterally directing the military to get off it's ass and up the anti.....for the better. Get your head out the Vietman paradigm.
The military is not sacred. It's a bureaucracy full of egos and CYA decision makers. Read up on Lincoln's military role in the Civil War or FDR's role in Operation Torch among others. A complete hands off approach by the civilian branch is a recipe for disaster.
In our system the military is not nor should it be the sole arbitrator as to what the correct military strategy should be. Military decisions based upon political considerations sometimes end up being the most effective MILITARY strategy.
