Here in Houston, Metro bus drivers have been known to hit pedestrians who have the right of way.

You are right...roads are for cars (and my motorcycle). However, the US is sorely lacking in facilities for walkers, hikers, bikers, etc.

Not that I think Euros are smarter, they do provide better for their non-motorized masses.

Perhaps more people walk, take subways/trains/buses and ride bikes because their gas is so $$$.

My advice to friends/family visiting the US....drive, don't walk.

I agree. I was stationed in Orlando for a while when I was in the Navy. I would have to rank driving in Orlando as worse than DC, NYC, LA, or any other of a dozen major cities I have experienced. It is the only time I saw people carpooling for the sole purpose of reducing the risk that your own vehicle would be involved in a wreck.

I think your phrase "not attentive" is far too kind - willful and malicicious negligence seemed more appropriate on a few of my near misses.

I've been around lots of major cities too - and it's bad here. I've never seen so many wrecks on freeways than I have here - and they never seem to be minor - we're talking very ugly stuff, and very often fatalities involved.

Headline should have read "Pedestrians Most Likely to Dare Drivers in New Mexico" IMHO.

Let's not forget the trains! The BNSF engineers get "dared" all the time, especially in places like Gallup. Note to pedestrians, you can NOT "split a train with your nose". (shameless Python misquote)

"Drivers think that they own the road because they bought a car."

Well, yes, pardner, and the sooner you adopt that, the safer you'll be. Unless you prefer being right and roadkill.
