Governor plugs Christmas back into tree lighting ceremony(Schwarzenegger axes "Holiday Tree")
Associated Press ^ | December 3, 2004

Posted on 12/03/2004 6:04:36 AM PST by presidio9

Governor Schwarzenegger lit the state Christmas tree and ended a secular practice of calling it a "holiday tree."

The governor made no mention of the name change that was in honor of the late Senator William "Pete" Knight. Schwarzenegger said at Knight's funeral in May that he would change the name back to Christmas tree.

Knight had lobbied unsuccessfully to change the name after Governor Davis decided to call it a holiday tree.

During the 73rd annual lighting, Schwarzenegger took on the role of "Triminator" as he helped a disabled girl trim the tree with the final ornament.

The governor and first lady Maria Shriver then flipped a switch to light five thousand multicolored bulbs before a crowd of about one thousand onlookers.

Isn't it supposed to be called a Holiday Tree that symbolizes what some faith experienced groups call a holiday to recognize the birth of a homeless child to homeless parents some 2000 years ago.

What's up with this Christmas thing? Sounds religious and probably very exclusionary. /sarcasm

And public pressure changed the mind of the Mayor of Denver.

By the end of the day he decided Christmas wasn't such a bad word after all.

Little by little we are bringing our traditions back to our public squares.

As a CA resident kudo's to Arnie. IT IS CHRISTMAS FOR GOODNESS SAKE, so therefore it is a Christmas Tree and frankly if people don't like this holiday we celebrate than they can just leave!!! or go home and celebrate your own way everyone else can celebrate there way they want except for anything to do with Christ, Jesus or GOD. So Kudo's Arnie for giving CA back the Christmas Tree and can someone tell me what exactly is a Holiday Tree??***!!!

With an attitude like that, we could be looking at another 228+ years of freedom in America!

Let me be the first on this thread to say "Merry Christmas to you Bahbah!"

Rather than call it Political Correctness, which implies that it is correct, I choose to call it Liberal Internationalist Speech Protocol (L.I.S.P). Or Liberal Speech Orthodoxy, which has a nice Stalinist ring to it. Of course we have our own orthodoxies, and it won't be long until someone comes on this thread and says "This is nice but Schwarzenegger has made pro-choice statements in the past so he's really a RINO and not our kind of conservative.

Merry Christmas has been a violation of LISP for a long time. What's new this winter seems to me to be the attempt to make it illegal and/or eradicate it completely, as if it never existed.

Tony Snow wants to go sing Christmas Carols in front of the ACLU office. I say that to make the required impression we need to go to the Capitol Rotunda and do it.

MY civil disobedience strategy for this one includes everyone getting an LA County seal, with crosses, and putting on the windows of their cars.

Where is the line between the unwritten rule regarding separation of church and state and the clear statement of the Constitution that free exercise of religion shall not be abridged? It seems to be lost. It needs to be found.

Not new. You're hearing about the same number of instances where some people or places try to be "inclusive" (resulting in being "exclusive") and the citizens protesting.

Yes, calling it a "Christmas tree" is in violation of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..."

And it flies in the face of the attempt of the West to deny its cultural history (as in the EU Constitution).

We need some wins against the ACLU. Right now I believe most of us don't believe there is any way to beat them given the unholy alliance between them, the 'rats, the rest of the leew'yehs and the judiciary.

Good for him. I was thinking that if the liberals get their way we should just ban Christmas totally. No more holiday gift giving, no more retailer profits, no more breaks from school and no more over time for working on Dec. 25. I'd like to see them try and do that. It is the logical conclusion to their efforts. If a move was afoot to ban Christmas then I am sure there would be a lot of resistance and Christmas would be come back into vogue with a roar. It would show what total asses these people are.

Um, people are going along saying Merry Christmas and celebrating it. Your aggressive attitude is not attractive, not persuasive, not representative of what you claim to stand for and just plain not nice.

That's how it comes off, anyway.

BTW, I didn't suggest an alliance with the ACLU, holy or unholy. I based my above comments on your other posts including this curious chastisement seemingly directed my way when it was not warranted.

Yeah well...I'm going to roll it next Halloween and put up a big sign that says "Holiday Tree."

Why do these people act as if Christmas is the only holiday or holiday season? If it's a holiday tree then it has to be up year round cause Martin Luther King Day deserves the holiday tree, and labor day, and Easter, and New Year's Day, etc...who do these clowns think they are fooling calling it a Holiday Tree?

Looks like the "perpetually disgruntled" are the ones who won the fight.

The ACLU folks are the same types who cry over the so-called "poor economy". Maybe the lackluster sales figures for the first weekend of Christmas(!!!) shopping is a natural consequence of the war-like stance being taken against any mention of the word "Christmas" of "Jesus". The mean-spirited actions of the secularists are having bad consequences not only on the nations' moral values but on the economy as well.
