Brokaw Astonished Over NYTimes Reporter Being Banned By White House Tue Nov 30 2004 10:09:36 ET

Outgoing NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw was asked on MSNBC's HARDBALL Monday if the Bush White House has been tough with the press corps, citing as an example of Dick Cheney stipulating no NEW YORK TIMES reporters on his trips.

Brokaw said, "I think they have been too tough.

"The idea that this White House has not given Tom Friedman a long, in-depth interview is astonishing to me. I have had a very good relationship with them, I have gotten to interview the President a lot. I have had access on the phone and other areas and I have been very vigorous in my discussions with them. But no reporter that I know covering national politics and the international policies that are of such great concern today know as much about them as Tom Friedman does and they have completely shut out the NEW YORK TIMES."

Why does the White House owe the NY Times any type of exclusive interview at all?

Friedman supported the Iraq war, to his credit, but he always has to end anything positive with some sort of slam at Bush, just so his liberal wife and friends will still talk to him.

About time. The whole press corps needs to be rebalanced.

Drudge and Freerepublic should get seats since our audience is so large....

Journalists amuse me with the thought that they have the right to know anything about anyone at anytime. They seem to think they have the right to ask a question and we have an obligation to answer.

Brokaw's attitude is typical of yesteryear's media. The assumption that Friedman or the NY Times deserves access because they are who they are is telling.

Just a friendly reminder -- Brokaw was booed by Oklahoma and Nebraska fans when it was announced at the OU/Nebraska game in Norman that he was in attendance.

Since then the Dems in this area have been praising Brokaw and dissing OU/Nebraska fans for booing. Been hilarious to read some of their letters to the editor and their spin on Brokaw and how fair and balanced he is -- right there you no he is anything but fair!

Why should the WH reward the NYT for their pack of lies and political agenda? They tried their damndest to derail Bush's reelection. What do they expect?

Who wants to give an interview to the Blair School of Journalism anyway? Doesn't Brokaw understand that?

The NYT gave up it's prestige and went partisan. Who cares about the NYT, they're losing power fast. In a few years, they have fewer readers than The Globe.

Brokaw is the least biased of the Jennings, Rather, Brokaw troika. But still biased. Which is why he thinks Friedman, who writes from the same viewpoint that the troika shows on the air, knows so much. I suspect that neither Friedman nor the big three personally know anyone who voted for Bush.

Condi Rice cannot keep a straight face when confronted with moronic questions and statements. Ergo, no Tom Friedman interviews. The NYT is of little importance in getting out the administration's message. They just distort (or lie, if they think they can get away with it).

I guess it's just in his nature to meddle in other people's business, whether it's his neighbor's use of privately owned land, or Dick Cheney's choice of who he will confide in.

The Administration owes the media nothing but a good trap block and a stiffarm.

The NYT's is proud to be America's 'Pravda' . . .

When they decide that distinction does not serve their readership; does not serve the truth; maybe they can rejoin the club.

I think Brokaw and the rest of the old media first felt the winds of change when, at Bush's first press conference, Bush did NOT allow Helen Thomas the first question. I do not expect the old media to die easy, but do I wish it would hurry up and die.

After their conduct in the past campaign, what would you expect? The NY Slimes is getting just what it deserves. Now we just need to take out the 3 networks. If they are going to do everything in their power foul or fair to destroy us, then we will just have to return the favor.

BrokeJaw is "astonished" because he's without clue. And yes, the N Y Slimes is Pravda West and it is irrelevant, and they are also without clue that their reign is over.

If Tommy BrokeJaw speaks in a forest and the N Y Times prints fish wrap in a forest and no one notices, does anyone care??? Hell no!

They might look at what happened to Helen Thomas.

So, they expect the dummy in the White House to think it is required that he serve as their punching bag to facilitate their efforts at bringing him down.

Maybe they should get a clue - this President is no dummy.

I wish the White House would cease ALL press briefings!

Let the "Journalists" do some leg work to the various agencies, pay for copies of documents, and then write their blurbs. I know I would have to do that and I strongly believe that the media should also!

The headline is incorrect. Thomas Friedman is not a "reporter"!

He is a columnist with views so self-contradictory I suspect (and maybe so does the White House) that he suffers from some kind of mental illness.

If the NYT assigned him to the White House press corps, I'm sure he'd be treated like any other reporter.
