Certain drugs, like methotrexate, can cause this liver scarring. I take methotrexate for arthritis but it is also prescribed for other diseases including symptoms of AIDS.
Alcohol is blamed in about half of all cases, but it can also be caused by viral hepatitis and other factors.
Could those "other factors" include lead?

Yasser Arafat did not die of poisoning but from a relatively uncommon blood disorder involving the body's blood clotting mechanism, the French daily Le Monde reported yesterday. The newspaper cited doctors "close to the medical file" who said that Arafat's death, on November 11 in a hospital near Paris, was caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a disorder of the clotting mechanism that can lead to severe bleeding and death.
"This subject is not under discussion in Hamas," said Ismail Haniyeh, a leader of the Islamic group.
