JERUSALEM In a new clue to the mysterious cause of his death, Yasser Arafat suffered from cirrhosis of the liver that wasn't caused by drinking, a French journal is reporting.Doctors with access to Arafat's medical file said the PLO chairman's liver was "in bad shape," the weekly Le Canard Enchaine says.
"The most likely scenario is that there were multiple causes of death. His coma was probably caused by the aggravation of his liver condition, in other words, the cirrhosis," the report says.
Cirrhosis is an irreversible scarring of the liver. Alcohol is blamed in about half of all cases, but it can also be caused by viral hepatitis and other factors.

Abbas met with leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which are responsible for dozens of homicide bombings and other attacks, to emphasize that the Jan. 9 elections require an atmosphere of security and calm.
But Hamas said Israel would have to pledge to halt its attacks before the group would consider a truce.
"This subject is not under discussion in Hamas," said Ismail Haniyeh, a leader of the Islamic group.
Islamic Jihad leader Sheik Nafez Azzam said it was "too early" to consider a cease-fire.

what lingering illness is associated with baby wipes?
Parenthood? ;O)
AIDS....
I think the odds of Arafat having AIDS, even if he were a rampant homosexual, are quite slight. I'm not sure why there's such a fascination with this remote possibility.
However, hepatitis can also be spread through sexual contact, oral-fecal contact (directly or through food providers that didn't wash their hands), and unsafe blood transfusions. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Arafat caught hepatitis in one of these ways.
Viral Hepatitis is associated with high-risk IV drug use and sexual activity. Maybe Arafat didn't get AIDS, but had the Hep instead... either way, he's gayer than the lollipop guild.
Certain drugs, like methotrexate, can cause this liver scarring. I take methotrexate for arthritis but it is also prescribed for other diseases including symptoms of AIDS.
LOL. Best laugh of the day!
Alcohol is blamed in about half of all cases, but it can also be caused by viral hepatitis and other factors.
Could those "other factors" include lead?
Finally...That's their story and they're stickin with it! (Of course my understanding was he had multi-organ failure...Picking the liver is throwing darts til something sticks)
"Viral Hepatitis is associated with high-risk IV drug use and sexual activity."
Yo, hey, dude: it's also associated with military service in the 60s and 70s.
Vets have Hep C at a rate estimated at TEN TIMES the population at large, and not from drug use or sexual activity, either.
As a matter of fact, normal sexual activity between healthy men and women is a very poor way to transmit Hep C. Sharing toothbrushes is more dangerous.
Risk factors include contact with the blood of the wounded or injured, or even the blood on a dirty razor in the barber shop...improperly sterilized dental instruments...accidental needle sticks in a medical context...gamma globulin shots...assembly-line airgun vaccinations...and, of course, contaminated plasma or blood.
The perception that it's a disease of junkies and the depraved can only hinder the thousands (or is it millions?) of vets who were infected in the line of duty from getting some long-delayed justice from Uncle Sam.
Don't think Hep C here, rather think Hep B. It's still common in some parts of the developing world. He could have gotten it before there was a vaccine. And Hep B was commonly a gay STD in this country before the vaccine reduced it.
And all this time I had assumed the cause of death was terminal ugliness!
"rather think Hep B."
You're right about Hep B, but when a person just says, "viral hepatitis," it's easy for people to get the wrong idea.
IMO, Hep C is a significant vets issue that is not getting either the attention or the funding it needs and that vets deserve.
The VA in Long Beach has had a very thorough Hep scan program for several years. They did the mailing to Vets in the area pretty often. Thankfully I was always negative.
Its a good thing for all Vets circa 1963 and on to get tested for every year or so.
Whatever Arafat had, he's dead.
And dead is the best thing he could be.
This is a good thing. Hep B was the larger problem, back when all we could do about Hep C was call it "non-A non-B Hep." Starting with the development of good blood tests and later the vaccine Hepatitis B is a much smaller problem - in the US - than it used to be. I suspect it will remain a major problem in some 3rd world areas for quite awhile. They can't afford mass vaccination for it. We haven't had good C tests for as long and still have no vaccine and only limited treatment so C has further to go. I hadn't realized Hep C was worse in the veterans community. If so, I'm guessing it reflects more transfusions in the pre-screening for C era.
The first Hep B vaccine came out and I got it about 6 months before my first Hep B patient in medical school. I drew a lot of blood on suspicious patients for unvaccinated classmates back then. There wasn't near as much concern among medical folks over "non-A, non-B" back then, but medical staff were at high risk, 1:1500 IIRC, for Hep B. It was not only scary for your health; it was potentially career ending.
Arafat 'died of blood clotting disease'
November 18, 2004
Yasser Arafat did not die of poisoning but from a relatively uncommon blood disorder involving the body's blood clotting mechanism, the French daily Le Monde reported yesterday. The newspaper cited doctors "close to the medical file" who said that Arafat's death, on November 11 in a hospital near Paris, was caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a disorder of the clotting mechanism that can lead to severe bleeding and death.
Or terminal HATE. That'll getcha every time.
"This subject is not under discussion in Hamas," said Ismail Haniyeh, a leader of the Islamic group.
...anyone wanna bet this clown has the ole bullseye that can only be seen from a predator.

"If so, I'm guessing it reflects more transfusions in the pre-screening for C era."
That's only a part of it.
Contaminated gamma globulin, incompletely sterilized instruments, fatigue induced mistakes (I was stuck with used needles twice), poor procedures (leaking centrifuges in poorly ventilated spaces), and assembly-line airgun vaccinations all played a role.
Yet the VA is loathe to certify Hep C in Vets as service connected, because they don't want to pay the bill. The way Vets with Hep C are handled by the VA is a disgrace.
"They did the mailing to Vets in the area pretty often."
That's good, but the problem comes when you try to get the service-connection certification so they'll pay for the treatment, or to get disability when you need it.
"Thankfully I was always negative."
Yes, that's something to be thankful for.
"Its a good thing for all Vets circa 1963 and on to get tested for every year or so."
Well, if you haven't had risk factors for several years and you're still antibody negative, I think you're safe. Antibodies should be detectable from soon after infection.
But if you're a vet from that period, and especially if you had the airgun shots, you should definitely be tested now.
It's also a gateway disease to AIDS.
Arafat 'died of blood clotting disease'
The liver makes most of the blood clotting proteins. If the liver is sick enough it doesn't make enough and lots of things start to fall apart resulting in DIC amongst many other fatal consequences. The Billion Franc question is what made Arafat's liver that sick. Those who know for certain aren't talking. Livers can take a lot of damage without failing this badly. The most common culprits are end stage alcoholic cirrhosis and some types of viral hepatitis (especially B or C types.) Nobody, not even his numerous enemies, has suggested he was a drunk. Thus leading to the medical speculations in this thread.

He's in a leversable coma. He's in a tleatment, he's in a tleatment.
It would be awful

That would be so mean . . .
My oldest brother lived in Pakistan years ago.
While on his journey home, his flight was delayed for a day and he had to stay in Karachi overnight.
Naturally, he had to eat and visited a local establishment.
He flew home to California but started to get sick, really sick.
After a few days, we rushed him to the Hospital with a 106 1/2 Degree fever.
After many tests, it was determined that he has Hep B and likely faces a lifetime of problems, centered around his liver.
As a side note, Muslims preach that you must not use the left hand for eating, thats because the left hand is used for ...Ummmm...wiping.
The rampant spread of Hep in the Muslim world can be directly traced to this disgusting practice.
Cheers,

anyone speak french? is the name of this rag, "the enchanted duck?" sounds like a check out line magazine to me...
I meant high-risk drug use (IV drugs) and high-risk sex (sodomy, especially promiscuous gay sodomy)
Yes, I know what you meant.
My point is that with Hepatitis C, there is a HUGE number of infected Vets who contracted it without engaging in those behaviors.
Please see the notes I wrote earlier in the thread in response to a couple of other posters.
Doesn't one get hepatitis by eating s**t?
"Doesn't one get hepatitis by eating?"
Not Hep C, no.
The hepatitis alphabet is a number of entirely different diseases that are all called "hepatitis" solely because they all attack the liver.
Hep A and B can be transmitted in the way you so poetically describe, but several of the others are not.
