Rick Santorum and George W. Bush told us that the GOP needed Arlen Specter. We needed Arlen Specter to deliver Pennsylvania for Bush. We needed Arlen Specter to boost the party in the Keystone State. We needed Arlen Specter to keep the Senate majority.
Santorum and Bush were wrong. They were wrong morally, and they were wrong politically. These men saved the man who saved Roe v. Wade, and now the costs to the pro-life cause, the conservative movement, and the Republican party for so little benefit could be deep and long-lasting.
Pennsylvania was always a stretch for Bush, and any decent political analyst knew that before Specter won the nomination in late April. The biweekly Evans-Novak Political Report, for which I write, said long ago that Bush would win Pennsylvania only if he somehow got a nationwide landslide. In other words, Pennsylvania would not be Bush's margin of victory, it was clear.
Not only should the GOP leadership have known Bush would lose Pennsylvania, they should have known that having Specter on the ballot would not help. It is an odd assumption that liberal voters would go to the ballot box to vote for Specter and think: "As long I'm voting for the Republican Senate candidate, I may as well vote for the presidential nominee in the same column."
It is more reasonable, in a year in which the base's motivation was questionable, to argue that Specter's primary challenger, conservative Rep. Pat Toomey, would have helped more by making sure the base, as well as the pro-life Bob Casey Democrats, showed up and pulled the Bush lever.
Specter's unhelpfulness on the presidential level also showed itself in some very concrete and visible ways. Most striking were the "Kerry and Specter for Working Families" signs posted around Southeastern Pennsylvania. Was the culprit some particularly ambitious freelance ticket-splitter? The signs were created, paid for, and posted by a 527 created by Roger Stone, chairman of Specter's 1996 presidential campaign.
Dick Cheney went to Pennsylvania in the final week before the election, and NRO's The Corner caught the priceless transcript:
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE VICE PRESIDENT: This is a tough crowd.
A poll released on the day of Cheney's appearance showed Specter up by 20 points, and yet Specter didn't have the time to help the top of his ticket, which was trailing by five that same day.
Yet Santorum and Bush told us we needed Specter to help the president win reelection.
Nor did Specter provide any help down-ticket. He didn't do any rallies or fundraisers with the embattled congressional candidates around the Keystone State. Most notably, Republican Melissa Brown lost to EMILY's List favorite Allyson Schwartz in Specter's base of Northeast Philly and some of the suburbs, and Specter never leant a hand. Republican Scott Paterno also got no Specter help in his hard-fought losing bid in Harrisburg.
Toomey, Santorum told us, would lose to Hoeffel, while Specter was a sure thing. To begin with, considering Hoeffel's political mediocrity there is no reason to assume Toomey would have lost.
Second, losing Specter's seat to a Democrat would not have been all bad. A top Republican Senator, in explaining his difficulty in winning votes in the upper chamber, recently told a crowd, "I only have 51 votes really only 47." That was an admission that Specter like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, and Lincoln Chafee is a Republican in Name Only. Hoeffel would not have detracted from Bill Frist's functional majority.
It was clear as early as April that the GOP would be expanding its majority. Of the eight open seats this year, seven were in states Bush won. Of the highly competitive Senate races, all were in Red states, and nearly all were in states that were never in play in the 2004 presidential election.
In January, the Evans-Novak Political Report wrote: "In other words, Republicans have almost guaranteed an expanded Senate majority."
Would we really be worse off were Hoeffel a U.S. Senator now? While certainly more liberal than Specter, Hoeffel would do less harm. It is precisely the "clout" Specter bragged about that should worry conservatives around the country.
Specifically, Specter is in line to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is in charge of confirming judicial appointments. There is no doubt that we would be better off with 54 Republican Senators and Judiciary Chairman Jon Kyl than 55 and Chairman Specter.
But Bush and Santorum insisted we needed Specter in the Senate.
Exactly as conservatives said throughout the contest, there is no good reason to trust Arlen Specter. When we brought up that Specter sank Bork, he didn't defend himself, but instead pointed to what he did to Anita Hill. For any pro-lifer, the Borking of Bork should be an unforgivable sin.
Instead of Bork, we got Anthony Kennedy, who changed his mind at the last moment in the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey and cast the deciding vote to save Roe v. Wade. So Arlen Specter saved Roe v. Wade, a ruling he has repeatedly gone on record saying was rightly decided and ought not be overturned.
Still, Bush and Santorum told us Specter would play nice as judiciary chairman. Yet in a debate this October, Specter promised to deliver us "centrist" judges. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says he told them he would not allow any "extremist" judges on the court. Both the Post-Gazette and the Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed him on the grounds he would save Roe again and block more Antonin Scalias and Clarence Thomases.
Either Specter is misleading the papers and debate watchers or he is not really planning on supporting Bush. Bush has held up Scalia and Thomas as his model justices. The media do not consider them "centrist" and the Post-Gazette surely considers them "extremist." He has led the media to believe he would oppose another Scalia while leading conservatives to believe he would support one.
So either Specter's fooling someone, or Bush is fooling everyone. That is, Specter's actions and comments are only consistent if Bush already plans on giving us another Anthony Kennedy.
Considering this picture, one has to wonder what thoughts ran through Rick Santorum's mind as he tried to go to sleep on Election Night. Was Santorum surprised that Specter didn't help Bush? Did he really believe Specter could deliver Pennsylvania to the president?
Does Santorum feel betrayed by Specter's remarks on judges? Is Santorum ready to bear the blame for Specter's performance for the next six years?
Arlen Specter owes Bush and Santorum his career, but he isn't acting like it. Once we see what sort of Supreme Court Specter's committee gives us, conservatives will know what we owe Santorum.
Timothy P. Carney is a reporter for the Evans-Novak Political Report.
Thank You, Arlen
We reelected the worst Republican Senator, and still lost Pennsylvania.
THE VICE PRESIDENT: The president and I are delighted to be part of a great Republican ticket here in Pennsylvania this year. I want to thank Congressman Tim Murphy for his kind words and the great leadership he provides. (Applause.) And I also want to put in a good word for Senator Arlen Specter, although he couldn't be here today.
What possible good can come from having people like these call themselves Republican?...seems yo me a little like going to war with the French as an ally.
Every time the Old Media jumps on an indiscretion committed by a Republican, the Republican Party forces him to resign or step down from his position of power.
Specter committed the worse transgression against the conservatives in the history of the party. The leadership can force him to withdraw if they want. No excuses Frist, Cornyn, Hutchinson....
Don't let all of our sacrifices this year be in vain.
sad that we knew all about this 6 months ago but nobody would listen.
I think this is a second post for this article, but it needed to be posted again. It's devastating.
I thought Bush and Rove were making a big mistake when the intervened in behalf of this jerk, and it's more and more evident that indeed they did.
It's very possible that if they had NOT intervened, we would have had a strong Republican in the senate instead of this poor excuse for a Scottish lawyer. Not only that, but Bush might have won the state if he hadn't had Specter deliberately undermining him with his "Vote Kerry/Specter" flyers and his refusal to help get out the vote for Bush.
Big time mistake.
Maybe its time to consider whether Pat Toomey would be better than SANTORUM himself in the Senate. This campaign was the lowest point of Rick's career.

Thank goodness RINOs "deliver" their states to BUSH!
I believe as much heat as possible must be brought to bare on Specter.
He MUST understand that his grandstanding and unprincipled life is now open to the Red States and if he continues to make Liberal decisions the outcry from us will only grow.
Their is not a single seat within the Senate more important to the Conservative agenda being enforced over the next few decades than the Chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
It is the judiciary that enforces the US Constitution. It is through this committee that individuals are moved to judicial positions...positions that oversee all of this countries legal bodies.
No amount of blowback in making sure he does not get the seat can compare to the damage this Liberal can do from that position.
He CANNOT be allowed to chair this committee.
And if he lashes out and cannot humbly submit himself to the will of the Senate leadership then he is not the kind of Man we want to support in the first place.
If anything else...this should humble him. when all is said and done, I would rather he not get the chair.
"WE" [Not the Libs] we removed Lott for being an idiot and we can make sure this other putz does not interfere with what we want to accomplish.
Honestly, I'd rather dump him outright, pull his credentials and send him over to the Democratic side of the aisle...but I'm not a rational person when it comes to dealing with leftover hippie generation rejects/traitors.
We will see what ends up happening but the heat must remain on him.
Priority 1: Remove Specter from the Judiciary (Day 4)

Update:
Under the current rules, the way to go about preventing Specter from becoming the Chairman of the Judiciary is to have someone CHALLENGE Specter for the Chair. Hatch is term-limited and can't continue. Grassley is very unlikely to give up his Chair of Finance Committee. Senator Jon Kyl is next in line and seems to be the best candidate. This is where we need to concentrate on, getting someone to CHALLENGE Specter for the Chairman's role. We need to contact Senator Kyl to see his willingness and also contact other Senators to support Kyl in making a CHALLENGE.
Focus: Drafting Jon Kyl as Chairman - E-mail, fax, phone all GOP Senators!
I believe all this is decided when the GOP caucuses. But we still lack information on this. I have conflicting reports, they caucus next week, they caucus in the next two weeks. I believe the Senate is in recess until November 16th, but it is possible the GOP caucus in before then. We need understand the process more if we want to impact it.
Keep up the Good Work: We are being heard!
Watch out for Specter: Specter knows he is in trouble. Specter is going on the talk show circuit to make his case. Don't buy into his BS. Specter will point out that he has supported Bush's nominees. He voted for Thomas. He voted for Scalia. Of course, so did Senator Kerry and 96 other Senators. Like Senator Kerry, Specter wants to maintain the liberal balance on the court. They will only support a conservative judge if it does not threaten Roe v. Wade. Senator Specter says he doesn't have a litmus test. But just ask Specter what he would do if the court were divided 5-4 on abortion. I am 100% convinced Specter would pull out any and all stops to make sure a pro-abortion judge is appointed. The more I learn about Specter, the more I see that protecting Roe v. Wade is his number one priority. This is why Specter will do and say ANYTHING to get the Judiciary Chairman assignment. Specter is a snake, when he goes to pat you on the back watch out for the knife in his hand. Specter flat out hates social conservatives and 'strict constructionist' judges. Specter is a 'living document' guy.
Our Resolve:
Whereas, liberal Senator Arlen Specter is in line to be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
Whereas, liberal Arlen Specter has a stated litmus test against pro-abortion judges.
Whereas, liberal Arlen Specter has stated he will fight against conservative judges
Whereas, in the past liberal Arlen Specter has helped defeat great judges like Robert Bork,
Whereas, the Democrats have loaded the Judiciary Committee with extreme liberals such as Kennedy, Feinstein, Leahy, and Schumer.
Whereas, liberal Arlen Specter is in a position to turn our huge and historic election victory into a defeat by killing the nomination of all decent judges,
Be it resolved, that we will do whatever it takes to get liberal Arlen Specter off the Judiciary Committee

Dear Senator Frist,
After delivering the Republican Senate a historic mandate, the vast majority of Republican voters where shocked and disheartened by Senator Specter's open refusal to join the team. Senator Specter has every right to his views. However, The Republican voters who delivered this historic mandate to you have no reason to support Senator Specter. Senator Specter has made it clear that he cannot support us on Judicial nominations. We are sorry to hear that but must insist that Senator Specter be removed from consideration for the Chairmanship of the Judiciary Comittee. Since the Senator has made it clear he will not support us, we have no reason to reward his disloyalty.
Senator, the Republican controlled Senate is on probation. You HAVE to produce this time. The Republican base was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt after the narrow win in 2002.WE MUST PRODUCE and PRODUCE SOONEST. Anyone who stands in the way of real legislative leadership, as Senator Specter has made clear he will, must be removed or we will suffer significantly in 2006. For the good of the Country, the Senate and The Republican party, Senator Specter must not be allowed the Chairmanship of the Judiciary Comittee.

Well, with the help of the 100 corrupt and cowardly cullions, clinton walked. The senators' justification for their acquittal votes requires the suspension of rational thought (and, in the curious case of Arlen Specter, national jurisdiction). Mia T |

The anathematization of Arlen must transcend any specific issue. This jerk's rank opportunism rivals ---- and may even in fact exceed ---- Kerry's. |
Hey, hey, hey, now...
At least the French bring wine and cheese to the table.
Specter and the RINOS only bring knives (nice and sharp, so it'll stick nicely in the back).
You left off /sarcasm. LOL
For me...that is the signal from the White House to let him be.
I can only deduce that they've made some quid pro quo deals concerning Specter's election and W's nominees.
I'll now hold my fire. Once we merge with the enemy on the nominees I'll watch for Specter's activity. If at that point he gets in the way, the White House will turn on him and I'll get back to going after him.
For now it is clear, the White House will obliquely support him...therefore I cease fire.
Let's wait & see how things shake out, before calling the calvary. All this hysteria is getting to be a bit much. Guys, we all have to remember Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment "though shalt not speak ill of another Republican"
You all have to understand that democrats are waiting to divide and conquer us. Let's not give them the opportunity.
Abortion is our wedge issue. But it only retains its potency as long as Roe vs Wade remains intact. If it is overturned, abortion could become an issue that could easily be turned against us, and cost us power.
The vote comes this week. There isn't time to wait. Why don't you convince Specter to withdraw his request for chairmanship of the judiciary committee and let him wait to see what type judges Bush nominates.
Do you really think we're stupid enough to wait until after the election to campaign?
