Oh, it isn't cluelessness. It's out and out treason. That kind of person has infested the State Department for much longer than you might think. They have an agenda, and it isn't the best interests of the American people which they (supposedly) serve.
The person you spoke to at the State Department was being more candid with you than they usually are with an "outsider", and that surprises me somewhat. These folks are the ideological heirs of Alger Hiss, and Harry Dexter White, agents of powers inimicable to the United states, and her people...

Bush should demand resignation of all agencies and re-hire loyal servants that support the USA, his agenda, and safeguard us for 2008. This used to be SOP for a new President.
The error many on this thread are making, is the constant referral to these folks as "Clinton hold overs", they areen't. They were there largely before Clinton was elected, and cannot be fired simply because the other party gained control of the White House.
These "Rogue Weasels", and the USSD "Foggy Bottom ferret" that Endeavor mentioned, aren't political appointees, but "career" beaureaucrats, which are immune to the sweeping "get those other guys out, and your own guys in" changes that too many here call for. It's just not legally possible for the Bush Administartion to do, and politically inadvisable to try.
That said, these latest shenannigans, by these "Rogue Weasels", in injecting themselves in the political fray, may prove their undoing, as this kind of direct action may remove the immunity they had previously, or at least I hope so...

This is our choice in a nutshell. You can say you "support the troops" 'til the cows come home. The fact is that John Kerry is using this opportunity to repeat his early '70s anti-U.S. agenda thus giving the terrorists resolve to hang tough and outlast the collective will of the U.S. voters thereby arming the terrorists while spitting in the face of the same troops he pretends to support.
Treason rears it's ugly head again...
