MONTREAL - A gay man who was called a "fifi" by a used car salesman has been awarded $1,000 by Quebec's Human Rights Tribunal.
The man's name can't be revealed because of a publication ban.
The man told the judge he felt dehumanized, humiliated and degraded by the comment, which happened in November 2001 at Roger Poirier Automobile in Sorel, about 70 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
The salesman, Marcel Bardier, used "discriminatory words in regard to [the complainant], by revealing his sexual orientation in hurtful and vexatious terms," wrote Judge Michele Pauze in her decision, according to the Montreal Gazette.
"Calling someone a `fifi' constitutes a scornful way of referring to homosexuals. The use of this term wounds and adds to the disgrace and lack of respect of human dignity a person [can suffer], homosexuals in particular."
In addition to the $1,000 in "moral damages," the car salesman and his employer must also pay interest and expenses.
If the shoe fits...
Another keyword for the Morford list - "FIFI" ....
I think it's an insult to fifi's and fido's to use there name for Gay men..
He had two lawyers. The fi for each was $500.
This is how civil wars begin to form.
That is sooooooo gay! :P
What if he was called a "Sissy" Civil Wars for girlie men?
Vexatious litigation is that which is brought, regardless of its merits (usually it has none) solely to harass or subdue an adversary. It may take the form of a primary frivolous lawsuit or may be the repetitive, burdensome and unwarranted filing of meritless motions in a matter which is otherwise a meritorious cause of action. It is an abuse of the judicial process and almost always brings down sanctions on the offender.
Repeated and severe instances by a single lawyer can result in his disbarment.
In some jurisdictions there is also a list of vexatious litigants, generally people who have repeatedly abused the legal system and who choose to represent themselves rather than employ a lawyer. Those on the list are in general forbidden from any further legal action. The process by which a person is added to the list varies between jurisdictions.
I guess he would have thrown a hissy fit if I'd have called him a limp-wristed bone smuggler?
ok then..POLE SMOKER
What kind of car was "he" buying?
"Fisher of Pants Perch..."
I suppose you can't have a Juice Bar in Montreal and call it the
No more Jack and the Beanstalk in Quebec.
To be referred to as a "fi" is bad, but you have to go out of your way to called a "fifi".
Pardon my French, but this is a story from Canada, our northern most state.
They should award the money to the guy who said "fifi."
One time .. at band camp .. this guy said .. 'dude, don't be such a f*g'. I want $$ and I want it now!
Coming soon to a country near you....namely this one.
Guess I'll just have to be sued since no one cares that my morals and dignity are offended by these broken folk.
I mean, gays suck.
How come most people name there beloved pet doggies fifi??
What a fag.
Exact same title and punctuation, even, so there's no excuse for missing it with a "search" -- especially when a search for "fifi" would hardly turn up too many hits to read... Please, people, duplicate threads are a waste of everyone's time. Just bump the original, so everyone can discuss it on the same thread.
You mean those poor little poodle things? Fancy cats are what they are - yappie, snapping, annoying, pathetic, poor excuses for pets?
No real dog qualities there - man's best friend? Not!
C'mon - get a real dog!
Fifi - yea, that's a fair description.
I would name my dog Fifi and Po-po but since I have a Kitty it's just Zorro!
Zorro is a perfect name for a cat - especially if he isn't de-clawed.
Our boxer's name is Roxy - great dog, never barks, wouldn't harm a flea - no little dog (Edwards littlehands) insecurities.
You are right for the wrong reason. In Montreal, the store sign would need to be in French. "Fruit Stand" is a combination of two English words, so it would be clearly illegal.
Unforunately Zorro is declawed :( I think he's never really recovered from it, as a male he I think feels a bit de-masculanized, I wouldn't do it again...
Roxy is a cool name last dog I had was "ernie" a great Golden Retreiver...
I think animals tend to act like there names maybe that's why Poodles are called Fifi's
I wonder how Fifi would feel if someone were to intimate he might wear a tutu? So so?
Thanks a lot. I just got done with some stupid harassment law training class ten minutes ago and then have to read about some stupid lawsuit by some thin skinned canadian mad because hewas called fifi.
I just about spweed pizza on my keyboard. Laughing so hard my Ashtma is kicking in.
And if the gay man had called a straight person a "breeder", I am sure there would have been similar compensation for the straight person.
