Bush to skip AARP gathering of 25,000 members
KVOA News 4 (Tucson, AZ) ^ | October 12, 2004 | AP

Posted on 10/12/2004 3:46:39 PM PDT by MikeJ75

WASHINGTON President Bush won't attend the annual convention of the A-A-R-P, although he'll be in Las Vegas at the same time as the group that helped him pass last year's Medicare prescription drug law.

Laura Bush will speak to the A-A-R-P, instead. Bush will appear at a campaign rally.

John Kerry, who opposed the Medicare law, has accepted an invitation to address the meeting of 25-thousand on Thursday. The attendees represent the group's 35 (m) million members.

The A-A-R-P's backing of the controversial Medicare legislation prompted 60-thousand members to resign. Since then, the organization has campaigned for changes, such as legalizing the importation of cheaper prescription medicines from Canada.

Kerry supports that position. Bush says he's against it because of safety concerns.

I think this is CR*P! Those people are citizens and they are citizens with significant voting power. Additionally, this is a freaking election year and it will play poorly to old people across the country(do you really thinkg the MSM will ignore this...Bush is throwing them red meat), whether or not they give a flip about the AARP and will say to them that Bush doesn't care about their issues.

Sometimes you need to rise above the fray and be the bigger person. Bush needs to step it up and go to the meeting.

You really don't get it -- AARP is DEMOCRAT!!!! He would probably be boo'd which would be a lot worse. If I were him, I wouldn't speak to those delegates either. Sending Laura is a much better idea because I don't think they have the nerve to boo her.

My Mom is in her 80's and she thinks AARP is nothing but a leftist organiztion.

I think this is CR*P!

Um, no, the AARP is CR*P. They've spent lots of money in South Florida bashing the administration on senior health-care coverage. What goes around comes around, and I don't seriously think the AARP's endorsement (which Bush won't get anyhow) is going to churn out many votes.

Those people would give him about the same welcoming as the NAACP. He doesn't need that type of reception right before a national vote.

Laura is the ideal choice. Everyone generally likes her, she can make his case better than he could to this group of voters. She's also less likely to be "booed" and if she were, it would prove to the Bush campaigns favor again because people like her.

Does Kerry realize that he is outsourcing pharmacist jobs to Canada? Pharmacists are well paid and they will have to find lower paying replacement jobs. (Insert further leftist bilge here....).

Who will be the first candidate to stand up and call this for what it is - Price Controls. We are hiding behind the Canadians but what we are doing to trying to get the Canadians to enforce price controls FOR us. And guess what? The drug companies will just limit the volume of sales to Canada and the Canadians will have to choose between supplying their own citizens or the greedy Americans down south. This shouldn't take long to settle itself out. Face it, the drug companies are smarter than the idiot legislators who try to control them. There isn't a single price restraint imagined that hasn't been avoided, manipulated into oblivion or replaced by one which is more profitable to the drug companies. If you don't face them head-on, we will continue to lose.

Go check out the AARP legislative forum if you enjoy debating with people over the age of 50 who think it's fun to call the President "Shrub".

I don't know if Laura is "the perfect delegate" or not. She is intelligent and charming but IMHO, The Prez should have gone himself and faced down these people. I was not in favor of him missing the NAACP Convention. Take your fight to the enemy's camp. The Prez told Kerry: "You can run but you can't hide." We must not appear to be "hiding" from possible hostile audiences.

I dunno. Maybe I'm missing something here. If I am, please let me know.

They may be a large voting block, but I don't think that Bush would change any minds by attending. Laura is much less controversial and will make a difficult target for Kerry's abuse.

Bush will debate healthcare tomorrow night and clean Kerry's clock with the personal care accounts and higher deductible insurance which will cut the cost of insurance to consumers by 50% and pay for it in pretax dollars. Then you factor in the market response to the direct consumer involvement in their own care and the savings will be huge. The law suits will be reduced by the consumer involvement as well. It's a win/win plan.

All Kerry has to offer is recycled Hillarycare. Ya-a-w-wn.
Actually Hillarycare shouldn't bore the seniors, it should scare them to death because its a triage system with seniors at the bottom.

Bush cited safety concerns. This sounds credible. Say the Secret Service or FBI are aware of certain threats, related to Al Quaeda. An attack on the AARP gathering would be really bad. Kerry would get a lot of positive MSM hype, although it's hard to imagine him getting more than the MSM's normal, Kerry schmoozing.
