SFGate ^

A colorful mosaic gracing the entrance of Livermore's new library has 11 of the 175 names and words on the piece misspelled -- from "Eistein" and "Shakespere" to "Van Gough" and "Michaelangelo."

The $40,000 project now will cost the city a few thousand more because it must pay the artist to fly from her Miami home and correct the mistakes. was unapologetic about the blunders when she told the Associated Press that others present when the mosaic was installed should have caught them.

Besides, she said, it's art.

I especially like this part: "A divided City Council voted 3-2 on Monday to pay artist Maria Alquilar $6,000 -- plus expenses -- to correct the errors because state law bars the city from removing or changing public art without the creator's consent."

does spelling count? I don't think so.. so long as I can easily figure out what the person is talking about, like you can 90% of the time when someone misspells a word. I don't care, some people on the other hand get really anal about spelling and grammar.

Ahem, spelling and grammar are very important if you are to be taken seriously. If you suggest they are not important, then why bother having them taught in schools??

I would just post a sign: "All spelling errors are the responsibility of artist Maria Alquilar," perhaps along with a picture, and listing the correct spellings. Let her be a laughing stock for a while.

(If you don't have the hammer you are going to be the anvil, and I would rather be the hammer!)

And you mix your pronouns in your tagline...

More correct: "If you are not the hammer, you are going to be the anvil, and I would rather be the hammer!"

There's more to the story today. My local Livermore paper reported that the artist is now *refusing* to come correct the work, and instead wants the city to *pay her* to come rip the whole thing out!

She says she's received racist emails and death threats since this story went national yesterday.

I'd post the article but I've never posted an article to FR and am not sure how. But it was in the Contra Costa Times today.

Everyone makes mistakes whyle typing. :o) However, some basic rules of grammar and/or spelling are important if one is to be taken seriously. Every time I see the word "loose" used for "lose", it drives me batty. 9 times out of 10, that isn't a typing error. Someone simply does not know the difference.
