I have bad news about my little girl...I just got back from the vet...she is staying overnight tonight and will have surgery tomorrow morning. My daughter was carrying her and tripped...Trixie ended up with a broken leg. I am very worried about her, she is at the vet's office without any people there to watch over her.

OH NO! PAJAMA PUPPIES SUPPORT NEEDED HERE...

Injured, frightened, alone at the vet's office overnight without her Mama Puppy Ping...

All PJ Pups on board for trussell's baby. Prayers UP!
Y'all put a little extra wish in there for trussell as well.
She might need it more than her baby.

Thank you. I've made a decision that the kids won't be allowed to carry Trixie anymore. She is too easily hurt, and I love her too much to lose her.

You have my prayers, trussell:

Trixie will be just fine once he returns home. Wondering why Mom is always so close by. Just remember that pampering and cuddling is very theraputic to little girls.

Jack.

Just got off the phone with the vet...

Trixie was scheduled to go in for surgery this morning at 10:30 our time. I was told to call at 11:30 to check on how it went.

Doc says he set the leg and put a splint on. He did NOT do surgery and does not believe it will be necessary to do surgery after all. I have an appointment to talk with the vet about her care in 2 1/2 hours. She will be staying at the office...sedated for another day.

PTL...all your prayers helped!! Thank you!!

Thanks for the puppy update.

Don't be too hard on your daughter. As upset as you are about this, she feels x2 as bad because she was responsible.

Trixie will be just fine. Expect her to come home with a lampshade around her neck to keep her from chewing on the splint.

This may sound gross but smell her splint a couple of times every day, check and make sure her little toes seem warm or at least equally temp left to right.

Change in smell can indicate infection especially an "off" or "nasty" smell. Usually with a fracture you will have swelling and these things can rub or cut off circulation.

Equal temperature side to side means her leg is getting good circulation. A distinct chilly extremity can mean a pressure problem and her leg isn't getting good blood flow.

Dog's are reluctant to acknowledge pain . I would insist that the vet give her something for pain for at least the first 2-3 days. She'll probably be fine after that.

She will probably adapt very quickly to the splint. In people they immobilize the joint above and the joint below. I don't know if they do it the same way in 4 legged people.

She may have to be carried up and down steps for a few days. After that you can make your lives a lot easier with a plank on the steps if this is an issue for going out to potty.

If she is not on a supplement already, I would put her on one. She may not need the vitamins but she will need calcium and phosphorus for good bone knitting.

Dogs bounce back a lot quicker than people. They don't have to contend with anticipatory fear , especially with movement and they don't worry.

Prayers for you guy's.

That is a lot of wonderful information!!

I got to see Trixie for a few minutes today. The break was both bones of the right front leg...right above her wrist. You are right about the joint above and joint below thing. She is immobile from the shoulder down.

They didn't have the lampshade on her today, but that doesn't mean they wont put it on her in the morning...

For pain relief...can I use baby aspirin dissolved in water? The doc already told me he doesn't expect her to need meds, but I think she is going to hurt! As for the supplements...where do you find that kind of thing? Not sure where to find puppy vitamins!

Thank you for the information and the prayers.

Oh, and I don't blame Crys for what happened. I will just make sure that we have the leash from now on. That way she doesn't have to be carried.

Hugs to you!!

Stay away from baby aspirin. Aspirin is a low level anticoagulant and would make her prone to bleeding. Could even cause stomach ulcers.

Rimadyl is an anti-inflamatory that they use in dogs. There is also an opiate that they use in dogs but I can't remember the name of it right now.

Walmart had dog vitamins a lot cheaper than even Petsmart or Feeders supply. I buy the adult vitamins but they also have puppy vitamins. Scan the back of the label and go for the one with the higher calcium content.

They may be waiting on the lampshade to see if she is prone to chew on her splint.

If they could splint her it pretty much means she had a clean break that stayed in good alignment. This is a very good thing.

When they have to do surgery you have a wound that can get infected. Many times they do what is called pins or an external fixator. They are nothing but another source for infection. A cast or splint can be unwieldy but it has a lot fewer risks for complications.

Hugs and kisses to you and Trixie.

Trixie is home...

They called at 8:30 this morning and said she was ready to come home. I was reading your post before I left, but I only got a couple lines read before we went out the door. I asked for some pain reliever for her and the vet said no. He doesn't believe she is in pain, so he wont give the meds.

She must not have shown signs of chewing because she does not have the lamp shade on.

They knocked her out and set the leg. One person holding and pulling on a rope attached to the end of her leg...the other person holding and pulling on her. They took xrays to make sure it was set... and by what the doc calls pure chance, and I call a miracle because of the prayers of my FRiends... He got both bones in line!!

How do you get a dog to take her vitamin if she wont even take moist dog food or dog treats? Should I crush it and put it with some people food? She wont just swallow a chunk of cheese with a pill in it...she chews everything and if there is a pill in it, she will spit the pill out!

Thank you for sharing such good information!! And for the hugs and kisses. Here are some of those back to you!!

My dogs love their vitamins. They get excited and squirm when I get the bottle out. They don't have that vitamin smell the way human vitamins do.

Doesn't Trixie like crunchy treats? The ones that I use have the consistency of a milk bone.

I'm so glad that Trixie is home.

It sounds like they set her pretty much the way they do people. It is so much better on them if they can set it without cutting.

You could try crushing them and putting them in a little milk or maybe some bullion.

Morning Taz...

The vet office did have some medicine for Trixie...they just forgot to remember to send it with me. Funny, since I had asked about it and the vet told me that he wasn't going to give her any.

She eats her vitamins!! I didn't think she would because she wont eat canned food or any dog treats that I have bought for her! I got her the "senior" vitamins...because they have higher calcium in them.

We are so happy to have her home, and I am so glad I have you as a friend. Your information is wonderful!

Good news ping!

My neighbors whose sweety lab passed last week had an (I think) two year old male black lab/mix show up and hang around. He has a collar and tags (license/rabies) but no name tag. The neighbors are oldsters and really don't have the energy for a pup.

He is a doll! Skinny, but solid black with white socks and a star on his chest and over his right eye. He comes when called and doesn't bark. I think someone dumped him out here since it's a pretty well-off neighborhood.

Anyway, they have named him Beau or Bo, are feeding him and letting him sleep in the garage. They are convinced that their dog Bailey sent him. I think they are right, although I am not one to be superstitious. Just wanted to pass on the good news!

I am so happy for you and Trixie.

I suspected that she would like the vitamins. I've never tasted them but my girls act like they are getting something special, from a doggie palate, they may be tasty.

I tried the gummy bear vits. They are scaled for a 2 yr old. Solitare loves them but Jackie turns her nose up. Not all dogs like citrus flavors.

I've never had a little bitty dog. I have found the best thing to give pills in is braunsweiger, the pate like sausage. My current girls and all of my previous dogs gulped a shooter sized ball of it down without ever suspecting that a pill was in it. I don't know how a tiny pooch would handle it.

I have a dinner party today and am finishing up my first cup of coffee. I have to start peeling, cutting and dicing so that the real cooking will come off smoothly.

There is only going to be 1 other couple but it is a fairly big deal. I'm making a cheese cake and I've never done one before. I'm starting out with fresh cherries instead of pie filling for the top. It won't matter if it cracks because the top will be concealed.

It's going to be a trial for my girls. We did "meet and greet" in obedience school. They do such a good job when we meet people on the street. All the kids in the neighborhood come flying to pat them. They keep their little fannies on the ground and let themselves be patted and rubbed and hugged.

The times we have had company at home, they act like a couple of beasts. I don't know what kind of doggie logic says they don't have to behave as well at home as they do in public. I guess part of it is their excitement interacts and keeps them wound up and jumpy.

Gotta run. Days a wasting.

Taz
