SEATTLE Seismologists in Washington State are on alert as earthquakes rock Mount St. Helens. Plus, the rumbling of the world's largest volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, shows no signs of stopping. Are these two volcanoes ready to erupt? Mount St. Helens is just one volcanic hot spot and scientist are working hard to predict when or if there will be an eruption soon.
The Washington State volcano erupted in 1980. A good portion of the mountain was literally blown to pieces creating devastation in its path.
On Monday small earthquakes rattled Mount St. Helens at the rate of one or two a minute. Reportedly, this is the most seismic activity in nearly 20 years.
According to Jeff Wynn, chief scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Vancouver, Washington, early test of gas samples collected above the volcano did not show usually high level of carbon dioxide or sulfur. He said that this probably means that magma is not yet moving up in the system.
Wynn says that additional tests are necessary to better define whether there's magma moving under the mountain's crater.
Meanwhile, in Hawaii, in the area of the Mauna Loa volcano, dozens of earthquakes have been felt over the past few days. The last time the Mauna Loa volcano erupted was 20 years ago.
These recent activity has led volcano scientists to say that this leads to one conclusion. That conclusion is this will l

Between this and the last 4 hurricanes, my Grandma would be swearing that the end was near.
I remember when Mt St Helens not only erupted... it BLEW UP! Half the mountain disappeared.
I missedit back then, I was off Iran, but this time I will have Cable to video tape it!! :)
bttt
I agree. The Earth was organized by the Lord rather than created. Matter is neither created nor destroyed, but can be arranged and organized in a creative and useful purpose.
Nice knowing you, Delmont.
God is warning us that he will be really, really angry if Kerry wins.
Tks! I happened to be watching GMA this a.m. when the Mauna Loa story came across. I'm a nut for volcanoes anyway. Think I'll get banned for watching MSM?
Oh, goody. I'm going to the Big Island in about five weeks.
LMAO !!!!
To the Tinfoil, DU'ers! Here, I will help:
Just 5 weeks before the presidential election, more big news that will take away Kerry's last weeks of news time. How convenient. Two words: Karl Rove.
Does anyone know if the airports in Seattle or Portland were closed on May 18, 1980? I assume they were. I just checked Sea-Tac website, but nothing about possible ash etc. interfering with operations.
You going Skiing or surfing??
Maybe Toutatis will land on Mount St. Helens and stifle the eruption.
I wonder if they are closely watching Yellow Stone also? That would be truly devastating.
I'm sorry, what dead President would that be and what would be the signficance? I have to go offline now; will check again in the a.m.; there will surely be developments. . .
Bring your inflatable boat.
Here's the link to the Old Faithful webcam which I have bookmarked anyway. They're not talking about the "bulge." Teehee.

LOL. Maybe there's a guy named John Kerry up there this time.
Flew over MSH a few years after the eruption, half a mountain gone and lots of grey. Awesome.
KL- in 1980 there was an old-timer named Harry S Truman who refused to leave the mountain, it ate him up.
Okay, thanks, now I remember. Yeah, what a time that was.
Reckon he must be under hundreds of feet of ash now.
:)
There was a guy named Harry Truman who lived in a lodge on Silver Lake (is that the right name?) on Mt St Helens who refused to leave when she was about to erupt and who died there as a result.
I flew directly over Mt. St Helens in 1994 from Seattle to San Diego (quite a scenic flight), and it was an awesome sight, I was sitting at the window on the right side, and there was this mountain with one whole side blown out, you could see the path the lava etc took down the mountain, and big black path. It was humbling in scope.
You know what I think is crazy is that the visitor center is still open. Students are going up there for field trips.
Does any scientist know exactly when it will blow? I think not. They say it won't be bad, but do they really know that. Again I don't think so.
We could drop Michael Moore on it, and remove all doubt.
It's all Bush's fault (sarcasm).
And I'm going to be in Portland Oregon on October 8. Damn. Nice knowing you.
Yes, they are. A large dome has developed in Yellowstone
aand all the vegetation in the area has died.
57 people died, Govenor Dixie told him to get out, he told her to mind her own damn business.
That was during the Jimmie Carter era and was before he was worried about sitting in his pie.
Factoid---the Tacoma Dome, home of raslin and motocross was built from the lumber destroyed by 1980 eruption.
By the way, it was Spirit Lake, Harry owned the lodge and gas station there, he had one of those old fashioned gasoline pumps where they fill 10 gallons in a glass container, then subtract how much gas went into vehicle.
Maybe Toutatis will land on Mount St. Helens and stifle the eruption.
I just found out this morning "who" Toutatis is -- a mountain-sized potato-shaped rock that will do a fly-by of the Earth, approx. 600,000 miles from us, although the path is unpredictable according to the cool astrophysicist on GMA who also said if it were to collide with the earth, it would destroy a land mass THE SIZE OF FRANCE!!!
WOOO HOOOO !!!!
We could remove more than doubt. Heh heh.
..end was near! lol
I wonder if the situation is similar to the giant fungus growing underground in the Midwest, I think spreading westward from beneath Nebraska. Anyone have a status on the underground fungus? (I don't mean THAT underground. . .;-)
You must have a different bible than mine.
Matter is neither created nor destroyed, but can be arranged and organized in a creative and useful purpose.
God can do what he likes.
See? I told ya so! :^}
LOL!! You brought back some wonderful memories of my sweet grandma.
I knew they knew that already... my question was I was wondering if they are watching it closer now.
Yes, I'm sure they are, because they have stopped hikers
from going near the dome.
