Pres Bush disagreed when reporters said Gen. Abizaid asked for more troops...was there a followup?

The president IMMEDIATELY DISBELIEVED the reporters yesterday, and EVEN mocked them when he said to the effect that reporters "surely" wouldn't "misreport" the context of something a general said.

Does anyone know if there was any follow-up released?

Pres. Bush's disdain for the media was (for me) the best part of yesterday's news conference.

Yes, the TRUTH is that the general said they would need more IRAQI troops to protect the election.

The President had been discussing that very issue with the General yesterday morning.

I think it was 'Special Report' that also mentioned this last night emphasizing IRAQI TROOPS. The media at the press conference tried to spin the story 'their way'

More Troops Needed In Iraq, Officials Say
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A45683-2004Sep23.html

Excerpts:

"I think we will need more troops than we currently have to secure the elections process in Iraq that will probably take place in the end of January," Abizaid said after a closed-door briefing with legislators about the state of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, he added, "IT IS OUR BELIEF THAT THOSE TROOPS WILL BE IRAQI TROOPS," Also, he said, there may be more international troops.

So, Abizaid concluded, "I DON'T FORSEE A NEED FOR MORE AMERICAN TROOPS,but we can't discount it." There are 135,000 U.S. service members in Iraq. ..............

Asked for official comment, an Army spokesman said, "We have received no formal orders for Requests for Forces, and there is no planning underway."

The Iraqi troops, when not being killed in droves, have proven less than trustworthy. See the battles in Fallujah, for example. And most foreign powers are considering the withdrawal of troops (e.g. Britain) rather than the addition.

That will leave it up to our boys. I have no problem with that: we need more solid soldiers on the ground. To be honest, I think Bush and Abazaid have an "election front" up right now that is painting the situation rosier than it is.

Agreed. Things are going to get worse before they get better.

No there was no followup question.

Bush said he just met with the general and no request was made.

Later it was confirmed the general had said he wanted more troops --- IRAQI troops. NATO has just stepped up with 300 trainers to help build the Iraqi force as quickly as possible.

So the MSM lied by not quoting the general completely and accurately. Who woulda thunk it. Apparently it did occur to Bush since he just went over troop deployments with the general and Allawi.

Thanks to both of you.

That means the President was right on the money to be disdainful of the media's putting the story in the right context.

It was worse than that, really.....the way the presented it to him was such a distortion that it was a lie!

Never forget there are never innocent or honest questions asked of the president by the white house press corps.

There is always a hidden agenda to harm the president AND the country.

I think the picture IS rosier than what the media portrays it.

Its not a picnic over there in Iraq but I would surmise about 80-90% of the country is not a deathtrap laden with roadside bombs or beheadings.

The fact is, is there is a smaller than one-would-think posse of hatefilled morons who would rather destroy their own chance of freedom than allow Iraq as a whole to decide what is best.

It doesn't take very many people to lay a bomb on the road, sneak off and merge in with thousands of other Iraqis.

Yes, the Fallujah Brigade back in the spring was a failure. But you're still off the mark. That was then -- this is now.
