Dunn jailed for psych review
By ROD LEVEQUE, STAFF WRITER
POMONA - A judge sent a former Claremont McKenna professor to state prison on Friday for 90 days psychological testing after the judge called her a "bald-faced liar" for continuing to deny she vandalized her own car and reported it as a hate crime. Kerri Francis Dunn was not sentenced as scheduled in Pomona Superior Court. Rather, Judge Charles Horan temporarily remanded her into custody and said he would use reports from prison examiners to help him decide whether to sentence the Redlands woman to probation or additional time behind bars for the March 9 hoax.
Dunn will return to court Dec. 15 for sentencing.
"It's clear in this case what occurred," Horan told Dunn and her attorneys Friday. "Your client vandalized her own car and reported it as a hate crime."
Dunn faces more than three years in state prison.
She was taken into custody immediately following Friday's hearing.
Dunn was convicted last month of a misdemeanor count of filing a false police report and two felony counts of attempted insurance fraud stemming from her report that her car was spray painted with racial and anti-semitic slurs while she spoke at a hate speech forum at the Claremont Colleges.
Two witnesses later came forward and reported seeing Dunn slash her own tires and drive into a parking lot in a car already sprayed with graffiti.
The initial hate crime report sparked widespread outrage and publicity and prompted all five of the Claremont Colleges to cancel classes for a day of anti-hate rallies.
Dunn continues to deny wrongdoing and has said she will appeal her conviction.
Her attorney, Gary Lincenberg, asked Horan on Friday to sentence Dunn to probation. He said the woman has already suffered deep public humiliation and lost her job.
He said after the hearing that he was disappointed Dunn would spend any time behind bars, although he appreciated that the judge would consider the input of independent prison examiners before deciding on a sentence.
"I think the judge acted reasonably saying he wanted to get more information on her psychological makeup," Lincenberg said.
Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Martin Bean said he was pleased by Horan's decision.
In selecting a sentence, the judge must balance a fair punishment while also giving Dunn a chance at rehabilitation, the prosecutor said. The diagnostic exams may shed light on what motivated Dunn to commit the crime and whether she is likely to do anything similar again.
"This may help us determine if this is some fluke that is never going to be repeated or if it is something that needs to be handled in a more serious fashion," the prosecutor said.
Horan could have sentenced Dunn on Friday, but indicated that he was on the fence about what sort of punishment to mete out.
He seemed especially bothered by her lack of remorse. He said evidence in the case made it clear that Dunn staged the crime to rally support against hate.
He said the psychological effect of her manipulation on the colleges and community also should not be diminished.
"What Ms. Dunn did is dupe a lot of well-meaning, nice, intelligent college kids and lead them around like a bunch of lemmings," he said.
The 90-day review of Dunn will include a look at her prior brushes with the law. Those include a September 2000 shoplifting arrest in which she is accused of damaging her own shirt and bruising her arm, and then blaming it on an arresting officer.
While in state prison, Dunn will undergo a battery of diagnostic exams, California Department of Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said. At the conclusion, prison officials will submit a report to Horan with sentencing recommendations.
Dunn will likely spend her time at the California Institution for Women near Chino or the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla.

She'll say that even though the slashing of the tires and the grafitti were faked, everyone has to answer the questions that it brings up.
Maybe she'll organise the Felons for Kerry vote there in Chino.
I think we should demand to see this woman's prior political contribution records.
</sarcasm off>
Probably!
The Twin Towers Correctional Facility has a reputation for abusive guards. As leftist and bizarre as this professor is, I still hope she doesn't get physically harmed in this place. Both the guards and the inmates probably don't have too much tolerance for an academic.
Three months will probably be sufficient time for this professor to consider a drastic change in her life.

IIRC (If I read correctly) she is now a former professor. Without that academic sinecure to pay the rent, I guarantee she'll have a drastic change in her life. Maybe she can be a professional victim.
Colleges exist to provide employment to people who cannot make a living with their hands or their minds.
"Maybe she'll organise the Felons for Kerry vote there in Chino."
Probably will, but being a convicted felon they will have have to move to Broward Co. Fla. to vote.
Well...if she's in jail..at least she isn't voting...

Children of the Damned.
Thanks for posting the picture of this horses ass.
Another example of why bearing false witness is one of the Big Ten (commandments)!
She's already a professional victim. Look at her priors.
She suffers from "Victimitis", "Entitlementitis", and a rare form of "Empathetic Minorityitis".
Also probably thinks that "all sex", even marital conubial bliss, is rape.

I've been joking the same thing with my friends and family! She is clearly a hardcore Democrat liberal lefty. Could you imagine if her family is Republican, they would probably cringe with all the exposure!

sure..its a great idea. send loonies like that gal to the nut hatch until at least 5 November and call up all liberal members of our reserve forces and deploy them to the middle of the desert next week.
Hey... they dims think we are going to do it anyway..right?
Is Clairmont an all-girl's school? Or are females just more susceptible to deception by psychotic "progressive" manipulators?
Even if her car wasn't vandalized by Jew-hating Republican war-mongers, that doesn't prove there are none. The hate crime was fake but accurate.

The Claremont colleges are made up of several colleges in the city of Claremont. It's not all girls by any means.
She "Ratherized" her car.
I think I like this judge, he didn't mess around with her sob-story he just had the cuffs slapped on her.
A psych examination in jail doesn't sound very fun. And ya' know? I think she really is mentally ill.
Lemmings on college campuses? Judge Horan, say it ain't so!
I think it's hilarious that he's ordered this psych evaluation. It puts Dunn in a pretty tight corner. If she admits to the shrinks that she did the crime and expresses remorse to them, she knows she'll get a reduced sentence. That's what Horan wants: an admission and some remorse. Of course, her remaining defenders will then have a much tougher time making her a cause celebre and martyr.
But if she persists in denying the obvious, she'll be in the cooler longer.
And I still have heard nothing about disbarment proceedings against her.
Ah yes, liberalism is a mental disorder, thats for sure.
She passed the bar too. She needs to be disbarred. She's unfit to be in the profession. Why is nobody reporting on this?

"...She's not an attorney is she?..."
She's a lefty liberal, but unfortunately a smart lefty liberal. I remember reading in some of the coverage that she's got a BA, two Masters, a PhD, and a JD. I would have to do a search to find the article again. Either way, she is cooling her heels for a bit.

Isn't the female spelled "Frances"? Or is Francis used as a woman's name? Is she a man? lol
fyi
But Dunn's middle name may be a family name, perhaps her mother's maiden surname. Hence, "francis."
Ah yes. Thank you for clearing that up. It's so obvious to me now. :)
I think I read she's a member of the Louisiana bar -- not the California bar. (She may FREQUENT California bars, but I don't think she's a California-licensed lawyer)
I can't say this type of thing "happens a lot" but it's certainly not unknown or "rare"; it's really nice to see that others recognize these types of activities is every bit as hateful, and anathema to a free society.
Thanks for clearing that up.

The way I always remember the names is that FrancEs is hErs and FrancIs is hIs. Of course, the surname explanation provided by Bonaparte is also absolutely valid. That is a very popular middle name for folks of Irish heritage.

Bump for the night shift
Dan has a memo about this somewhere. She's just gonna wait till he publishes it to "prove" she didn't do it.
She's like a Michael Moore who got caught.
It's funny that the judge used the term "lemmings"
So true.
PING
Kerry F. Dunn?
A black sheep I assure you...
