I hope it works, but I suspect its going to be rough matching up the people needing a new face, and the event that will cause a person to die who is a good enough match for the person in need of a face. I guess they can match up people that are on life support for a while and who then die in hospital, where they can be a quick and immediate operation. Then comes all the ethical questions of waiting for the brain dead person to legally pass on.

All of these issues are already a part of existing kinds of transplants, like liver transplants, heart transplants, even cornea transplants and so on.

I heard about this recently and from what was said, it is the bone/muscle structure underneath that gives us our facial features. Basically what was said is it really is just a skin transplant t hat will conform to the structure of the person it is put on. What was given as an example was how forensics give pretty accurate pictures from a skull when they reconstruct a face--again, bone structure determine the features.

I think that people who need this surgery are in need of our help and prayers. I hope that this is not an attempt to make them seem like freaks.

The key word there is need. I can see people doing this to look younger prettier or what ever.

And yet those people will provide the funds and the experience for doctors to be able to help those who need it.

An interesting quandary.

I say do it! There are so many people who are disfiguered by either disease, fire or accidents. It would be nice for them to have a life. Although, I am sure the psycological toll might be great having someone elses face.

OK. That makes sense. I wonder what they do when the person's bone/muscle structure is partially missing or deformed?

Truly an example of how one's life can change in an instant.

WRONG! No one who wants to look prettier would have a new face sewn on. This is major facial reconstruction. This is not plastic surgery to make someone look better. They do not look better. See the photos on this thread.

I think your instincts are correct. Someone explained the other day that organ donors are never truly dead when organs are removed. They're "brain dead," which is a different thing. You'll need a doctor to explain the difference, but the explanation I heard made sense to me.

Nah, it's easy enough for anyone to understand. When you're brain dead, you're dead. There is no neural activity going on. No brain activity at all. It's dead Jim. You're not really kept "alive" so much as your body is kept oxygenated for a bit longer.

A team of doctors from Louisville and the Netherlands say in a new medical journal article that they are ready to perform a face transplant, a procedure considered controversial by some medical ethicists.

I see that Dr. Hannibal Lecter has found gainful employment again.

So is a lot of vanity surgery.

Yes. It is.

They do not look better. See the photos on this thread.

The photos on this thread are of people who have not had this procedure done.

The people who have this done will not come out looking worse but looking better.

This is intended mainly for reconstructing faces that have been disfigured. That is what most "cosmetic" surgeons do.

When you're brain dead, you're dead.

How do you know? How can you define death materialistically without making a circular argument?

Undoubtedly, there is a connection between mind and brain, but they're not synonymous. The mind is an aspect of the soul and the soul is the form of the body. Thought is an essentially spiritual activity.

So we can't say with certainty that brain death equals death (the moment when the soul leaves the body). We don't know the exact moment at which the soul leaves the body.

How do you know? How can you define death materialistically without making a circular argument?

Defining death when the brain ceases to function is no more, or no less capraciious than defining it when the heart stops. The heart almost always stops with brain death as well btw. The heart is kept beating artificially until the harvest team comes from the organs.

Undoubtedly, there is a connection between mind and brain, but they're not synonymous. The mind is an aspect of the soul and the soul is the form of the body. Thought is an essentially spiritual activity.

Sounds like poppycock to me. I find it somewhat amusing that your propensity for "sin" can and will increase if you damage the part of your brain that controls impuslive behavior. There are thousands of documented cases of this kind of brain damage, from injury, tumor, clot, bruise...

If you want me to believe that there is a mind apart from the organ we call the brain, you're going to have to show me something concrete in the way of proof.

So we can't say with certainty that brain death equals death (the moment when the soul leaves the body). We don't know the exact moment at which the soul leaves the body.

Uh, that's because you can't prove there is a soul that leaves the party.

In June 2001 Reggie Stephey was convicted of two counts of intoxication manslaughter for the deaths of Jacqui’s two friends. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined $20,000.

I can't recal this story. If I come accross this guy, he'll get some of my justice, because the state gave crap.
