Ye Olde Zot! Election - An English View
September 15 2004 | Interested Anglo

Posted on 09/14/2004 11:45:54 PM PDT by Interested Anglo

It might be argues that as an Englishman, resident in the UK, your election is none of my business but as it will effect everyone in the world, I feel entitled to a voice, if not a vote. (Judging by your last foray into democracy, perhaps votes are not all that important)

I do not envy you having to choose between the inarticulate incumbent Bush and an unimpressive challenger who seems to live thirty years in the past. Why can't you wonderful country find better candidates than this pair?

Whoever wins will have to confront the monstrous debt, ($7 trillion and growing at over $1 billion a day) which has been run up by the current administration. Your economy (and probably everyone else's)is therefore in for a very tough time and whoever wins will probably get the blame.

From my point of view the ideal scenario would be for a Bush win and then, as a result of the collapse of the economy, a Hilary victory in 2008. Kerry would be a one termer and the credibility of the democrats would be undermined for a generation if he won.

My worry about this would be the Bush might interpret such a victory as a mandate for open season on Iran which could unleash a terrorist backlash that would make 9/11 look like a tea party (and I am not trivialising the appalling events of that day)

We live in interesting but very dangerous times

For some demented reason, they've been trying to push sales of Michael Moore's and Al Franken's books in London: I see posters for their books from time to time on the Underground. I can only suggest that this fellow didn't have the sophistication to resist unsophisticated advertising, and the wit to understand that what Moore and Franken spew is rubbish.

Regards, Ivan

There was a movement some years back to refer to Spotted Dick as Speckled Richard. Unsuccessful, sadly.

Well as an American with British family roots (who knows, maybe my ancestors ruled yours), I'd like to respond to your rantings.

First of all, if you know anything about American history, you'd know that we don't pick our Presidents based on their looks or their public speaking capabilities. We, meaning we conservatives, pick our Presidents based on honesty, loyalty, and firmness of conviction. Take Abraham Lincoln for example. The media back then considered Lincoln a backwards country bumpkin, kind of like the same way they depict George Bush today. And it seems you blokes didn't think too highly of him either. If I recall right, your country was ready to jump in on the side of the South during the Civil War. When you couldn't defeat the U.S. on two previous occasions, you figured you'd weaken her ability to stay united by taking sides. But once you realized that there was no way the South could win the war, you turn tailed and ran.

Regarding the national deficit and your claims that the debt is growing at $1 billion a day. if you'll check the U.S. Treasury Department's website, you'll see that the national debt is actually going down each week, and it is expected to continue in that downward trend. If the attacks of 9/11, on one of the major financial centers of the world didn't destroy our economy, I highly doubt George W. Bush will. Despite the recession he inherited from Bill Clinton, and the corporate scandals that fermented & bubbled through the Clinton years, this country's economy has been strong and growing. The unemployment rate is 5.4%, lower than in 1996 when Clinton was running for reelection.

As far as a Hillary Presidency in 2008, I highly doubt it. New Yorkers have recently overwhelmingly proclaimed that they'd prefer Rudy Giuliani over Governor Pataki as a Presidential candidate in 2008. And since Rudy led in the polls against Hillary for the 2000 Senate campaign before illness forced him to withdraw, I'd have to say that a Clinton-Giuliani Presidential contest would end with Rudy being easily elected.

I highly doubt that President Bush would consider his reelection as a mandate to invade Iran. The main reason being that we have more than enough on our plates stablilizing Iraq and Afghanistan. But if we ever do decide to head into Iran, at least we won't have to beg those countries to use their air space or land our troops on their soil to get the job done. We will have made accessibility to that area alot more convenient for ourselves...and Iran knows it. Personally, I'd prefer a President who was willing to make the tough decisions to take out the world's despots, than have a President like John Kerry, who would look the other way for politicial expediency. I'd rather take the battle to the terrorists than have to battle them on the streets of this country. And unlike the mindset of the old Europe, I'd take a warrior over an appeaser any time.

LOL. I've had first hand experience with that. I had to park my 68 MGB in neutral just in case it decided to start itself. I finally installed a toggle kill switch.
