Ye Olde Zot! Election - An English View
September 15 2004 | Interested Anglo

It might be argues that as an Englishman, resident in the UK, your election is none of my business but as it will effect everyone in the world, I feel entitled to a voice, if not a vote. (Judging by your last foray into democracy, perhaps votes are not all that important)

I do not envy you having to choose between the inarticulate incumbent Bush and an unimpressive challenger who seems to live thirty years in the past. Why can't you wonderful country find better candidates than this pair?

Whoever wins will have to confront the monstrous debt, ($7 trillion and growing at over $1 billion a day) which has been run up by the current administration. Your economy (and probably everyone else's)is therefore in for a very tough time and whoever wins will probably get the blame.

From my point of view the ideal scenario would be for a Bush win and then, as a result of the collapse of the economy, a Hilary victory in 2008. Kerry would be a one termer and the credibility of the democrats would be undermined for a generation if he won.

My worry about this would be the Bush might interpret such a victory as a mandate for open season on Iran which could unleash a terrorist backlash that would make 9/11 look like a tea party (and I am not trivialising the appalling events of that day)

We live in interesting but very dangerous times

I would do only one valve per stop. It was a little ahead of what was needed, but if you let it go over 1000 miles the thing ran like a lawn mower. It was just easier to do it too much rather than let it slip and have to stop on the side of the road because the bike would only do 50mph. I was 17, and lucky to have the older guys even allow me to go along. It was wise not to be too much of a bother.

We'll come up with better candidates when you brits design an automotive electrical system that works. (lucas)

LOL, my first car was a Triumph (of marketing). It would go about 5 miles in a downpour before you had to get out, remove the distributer cap and dry it out with a rag and reassemble for another 5 miles of driving.

Why such a foul weather country would produce such a fair weather electrical system always befuddled me.

Because Jojo and Avril are both still too young to be president . . .

The seven trillion is the product of decades of excess, not this administration. The billion per day, well, in case you hadn't noticed, there is a war on. (And Bush's challenger has ideas for even MORE social spending, so don't look for him to solve the issue).

We're looking forward to open season on Iran and North Korea. I haven't noticed much a terrorist backlash from taking out Afghanistan and Iraq so I think you are mistaken. The primary sufferers of terrorism right now are our poor troops trying to Iraq safe for Iraqis.

Anybody who is hoping for a Hillary! victory is no friend of the USA. Why not go to DU?

A modest proposition.... I propose we allow non-U.S. citizens to vote in U.S. state and federal elections, subject to the following conditions (any reference to "he" is assumed to apply equally to males/females/trans-gendered/undecided/visitors from Planet X):

1. Prior to registering to vote, a person must demonstrate using certified records that he is in fact actually pays U.S. taxes. Earned-income tax credits and other Great Society wealth redistribution plans do not count for the purpose of this requirement.

2. Prior to voting, the voter's home country must repay all debts owed to the United States, financial/materials/blood/etc. The voter should present a notarized receipt at the time of voting to meet this requirement.

3. Prior to voting, any non-U.S. voter shall have paid all user fees for using U.S.developed technology (e.g. global positioning systems, satellite communications systems, nuclear power, etc.).

4. Prior to voting, any non-U.S. voter shall stand on a box at the polling place and declare loudly at the top of his voice "The United States of America is the greatest country in the world and a beacon of Freedom to all! My country, (fill in the blank), wishes to join the United States when we grow up!"

5. In the event a non-U.S. voter is unable to meet all of the conditions above, they will be summarily removed form the polling place and have the letters "STFU" tattooed across their posterior in 44-point Helvetica type.

(/tongue-in-cheek)
