Chat show queen Oprah Winfrey celebrated the opening of her 19th season on US TV today by surprising each of her 276 audience members with a new car.

How can I get tickets for her 20th aniversary show?

If a Republican did this, the headline would be Republican Contributes to Global Warming.

The cars retail for $21,300. That's about 5.8M for the cars alone. GM probably spends more than that advertising on Oprah, so it was probably a good tradeoff for them to get free publicity and give away all those cars.

I'd say Pontiac is the one being generous..
Are her ratings down or something? It seems she has to lure people into her audience to give away stuff.

So when one of those drivers kills someone while driving the donated car, will they sue Oprah for giving them that deadly machine?

"The cars, which retail for £15,500, were donated by Pontiac. "

Maybe this is a mistake, but I'd like this clarified before I go ranting about how "generous" Oprah is. If Pontiac donated the cars, then all Oprah did was put bows on them.

I can't believe the fuddy duddies on this thread. If I called up Pontiac and wanted two hundred cars for my friends, they'd call the mental hospital. The fact is that Oprah is a media powerhouse and the advertizing they get out of this is INCALCULABLE. I do not agree with some her political opinions, which aren't nearly as bad as many people out in hollyweird. She's the only talk show I will still watch after all these years. Some people can't ever be positive but complain and be JEALOUS of someone else's succees.

The people should say thanks to Pontiac, not Oprah. If she has no $$$ invested in this give-away, then she is just doing it for the publicity.

Sorry, but it looks to me like Pontiac is generous. Not Orca.

Well, even though this isn't coming out of Oprah's own pocket, it is still a nice gesture. Even with the resulting tax bill, I'd still take a new car.

That said, it still doesn't get Oprah off the hook for some of her really off the wall shows that she has from time to time. I believe there was a show recently about kids getting sex-change operations. Uh, not showing in MY house!

[shrug] Big deal. She's got the top rated syndicated show on the air, Pontiac's got cars to burn, why not?

Pretty shrewed move on both parts.

You can't buy this kind of free publicity.

Double-barrelled Mega-PING! to both lists! If you want on, FReepmail me!

My Mom and I saw this on the news. It didn't mention that Pontiac donated the cars.

I said to my Mom I can't stand Oprah Winfrey. She refers to Bill Clinton as President Clinton, but refers to President Bush as "Mister Bush".

My Mom said, she didn't care, she'd kiss Oprah's *** for a new car.

I have no use for Oprah or her larger than life media image. I'm from Texas, and still remember her anti-beef escapade here. Dis my President and Texas beef? Bite me, Oprah.

So in reality, those who purchase a Pontiac are paying for the donated cars.
