We need legislation now to prevent further gratuitous distribution of lower-priced automobiles to talk show audience members. This type of degrading philanthropy causes sinking self-esteem in the recipient.

Talk show hosts must only be allowed to give away top of the line automobiles from now on. Just say NO to cheap wheels!

Personally I think this is great. She didn't use her influence with the government to make the taxpayers buy her audience cars, she went to the companies and convinced them that it would be a good move for them. In turn she used her influnece in major media to make it worth their while.

I say, Good for Oprah.

This whole deal is classy.

It does not matter who paid for the cars, Oprah pulled it together. She is a very kind person and this was a class act.

I believe most of Oprah's audience are Democrats.
Maybe they will change when the IRS sends them a big tax bill.

She could have at least paid the recipients' tax on the gift. But then the recipients would have to pay tax on the gift of the paid tax bill! Cheapskates, Oprah and GM all around! A conspiracy to enrich the IRS, if you axed me!

Who wants to bet that 90% of the recipients will be stunned to find out they owe the IRS about $8,000 come tax day?

The cars, which retail for £15,500, were donated by Pontiac.

Good for Pontiac. For Oprah? Oh hum.

... another couple had almost 400,000 miles on their two vehicles.

Big deal. I have nearly 400,000 miles on my ’83 Camaro – and except for some very minor parking lot dings it looks good and it runs great.

In other news volunteers from around my county gave hours of their time and money to fight Alzheimer's

Their time and money wasn't donated by anyone.

In a related story, Bill Gates gave away 2,760,000 copies of Windows XP to an audience of Hackers.

One thing you have to say about Oprah: she is using her riches the way a lot of us wish we could. How fun it would be to be able to give decent poor people a surprise great chance at life. How fun it would be to give an audience a new car each. I think it would be more fun to do that than to mindlessly collect junk yourself.

"The cars, which retail for £15,500, were donated by Pontiac."

The b!tch didn't spend a cent; Pontiac spent $4,278,000.

She's on crack.

She's skinny again, too.

Wonder how long that will last?

pretty slick!

GM donates the cars and gets both a huge tax writeoff AND rid of surplus inventory

Oprah coordinates this giveaway and comes off smelling like a rose.

The audience gets socked with a four figure state and federal tax bill (all up front, too - no payments) in order for these "needy" people can register their cars.

Used cars are dirt cheap right no w. anybody who cannot afford to pony up a couple of grand for a usedie sure as heck is gonna have all sorts of trouble registering, insuring and paying the property taxes on a 15K newbie - however nice it is. Look for a lot of "Car for sale" ads.
But they all thank Oprah.

had MPLS and the state of MN just bought the people who actually pay to ride light rail on a regular basi s a new car rather than build light rail, the
state would have saved money in compatative cost to benefit
analysis. The same could probably be said of many , if not most state's super choo choos.

I find this whole thing grotesque. It simply feeds this notion, that is a centerpiece of the Kerry/Edwards campaign, that you get something for nothing. While we fawn over oprah distributing cars that she get donated from pontiac you may as well fawn over john edwards and his distribution of other peoples money in frivolous lawsuits, and hey why not fawn over john kerry for distributing wellness in the new department of wellness. We all can't marry wealthy republican widows and be part of the studio audience for the oprah show. Cheap Theatrics.
