NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say the unusual behavior of a New York truck driver who was pulled over for speeding and then shot during a confrontation with a state trooper has prompted them to investigate possible terrorist ties.
Mohammed Medhat Karim, 46, was pulled over Monday by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Thomas C. Kilpatrick for speeding on U.S. Highway 64 in Wayne County, about 80 miles southwest of Nashville. As Kilpatrick was returning with the citation, authorities said Karim backed into the trooper's car, and "there was a confrontation at that time." Kilpatrick fired several shots, striking the driver in his chest, according to reports. Karim somehow took the gun away from the trooper, got back in his rig and drove about a mile before apparently realizing he had been shot and pulled over, authorities said. He was then arrested.
"It's a very strange set of circumstances," said District Attorney General Mike Bottoms, who called for the probe. "We're trying to find out why a driver would act the way this one did for a speeding ticket."
Maj. Gen. Jerry Humble, director of Tennessee's Homeland Security, said authorities "don't have any indication right now" that Karim may be tied to terrorists, but they're just being "cautious." "It's normal procedure," Humble said. "This is the world we live in after 9/11, so this is the steps we have to take. Law enforcement never know what's going to happen."
Humble agreed with Bottoms that it was Karim's "actions" that "raised our eyebrows," not his foreign-sounding name or the fact that President Bush was in town Tuesday to speak to the American Legion national convention.
"It was irrational behavior from a commercial truck driver, and this was a crime," Humble said. Karim's tractor trailer has been impounded, he said, and it's going to be off-loaded. Authorities haven't yet learned what cargo the truck was carrying.
Meanwhile, Karim remains at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday.
No charges have been filed against him, and his driving record was not available under New York privacy laws. Kilpatrick has been placed on administrative leave with pay.

No virgins for you, Mohammed!

There have been reports that indicate the next terrorist attacks on this country will come in the form of truck bombs, etc. I'm glad this guy was stopped.
What was his truck carrying?
Wish I knew which caliber was used here that so completely failed with a center-of-mass shot.
Methinks the policeman used FMJ ammo. Big mistake, if so.
Mohammed Medhat Karim,-GUILTY!
It wreaks of 9mm FMJ. Only Winchester 127gr +p+ or Gold Dot +p's 124's are worth much in 9mm.
If I were open carrying (as a cop does) I'd pick a Glock 21 for sure.
You know it was a POS 9mm. I would resign without at least a .40. .45 is the best for downing an opponent.(even if you just wing em they slip in their own poop.)
"Kilpatrick fired several shots, striking the driver in his chest, according to reports."
Cool...
Why the hell are WE being so self-deprecating?

Local evening news here in the Nashville area says plastic coke bottles.
I'd consider .357 Sig, but still would go with a G21. 14 on tap rounds of .45 should work.
For those unfamiliar with that incident: At the time, all authorities claimed that it wasn't terrorism...just a lone, crazed Muslim Egyptian who decided to shoot up the El Al terminal before Israeli guards tackled him and capped him. It wasn't until 2003 that the feds quietly admitted that, yup, the guy was carrying out a terrorist attack. Gee whiz willikins.
Unless I'm in error, the caliber that most police departments utilize is 9mm. And yes, it's a crap caliber. I prefer either a .44 magnum or a .45 ++P hollowpoint.
And I like to keep this handy for close encounters.
Yikes. There goes Muhammad Ali. Sic 'em!

More Details About Trooper Shooting Released

Tennessee's Homeland Security office says a shooting in Wayne County is not tied to terrorism.
A state trooper shot and critically injured a truck driver Monday on Highway 64.
The driver of the truck was identified as Mohammed Medhat Karim of New York.
Trooper Thomas Kilpatrick told investigators that after he gave Karim a ticket for speeding the driver rammed his 18-wheeler into Kilpatricks patrol car.
The trooper reported that the suspect pulled a knife and the trooper fired several shots in response, police said.
Police said theyre still trying to find out why the man became so angry over a speeding ticket.
The truck driver was shot in the chest. He was transported to a Nashville hospital.
Aren't FMJ rounds a big nono in law enforcement? It's a lose-lose situation. Less stopping power and more likely to pass through and hit someone else.
Or do State Troopers use them because they will go through a car door like butter?
9mm is a marginal round really. Basically you need the best bullet you can get out of it. The best ones to easily get are probably Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +p's.
Whatever you do, don't use full metal jacket ammo. Winchester silvertips at 115 grain are too underpowered. +p doesn't have a real meaning according to SAAMI, but it means 'plus power' basically. Harder hitting.
Winchester Ranger T's are the other one I mentioned. They are labeled 'law enforcement only' on the box, but you can legally own them and buy them. Usually you have to go to gunbroker.com and search the ammo section for Ranger.
Get several boxes and make sure they work ok, and you've got, imo, the best 9mm you can get.
I'm curious about that too. How in the heck does this Mohammed wind up with the troopers firearm???...especially after taking a round in the chest???...
If FMJ isn't banned, it should be by LEO's. Safer for everyone but the perp to use JHP.
I am no LEO, but I'd think they could always load one FMJ-one JHP-oneFMJ-one JHP. Although maybe they are under some sort of legal PC constraints.
Now this is history making on FR. It has to be the very first thread that ever started out with a headline like "Trucker shot by Tennessee Trooper" that didn't have four hundred posts in the first hour screaming that an evil jack-booted donut munching thug cop had shot an innocent Consitution loving citizen for no reason whatsoever.
EXACTLY!!
Sounds like 'ol Kirkpatrick needs to spend more time in the gym and less time in the donut shop.
This also illustrates my point about women police officers.
They are next to useless in such a role.
Hmmm. Given the behavior (reaction) of the trucker, I've pulled out my tinfoil hat and matching vest... Were the Coke bottles empty or perhaps filled with tainted Coke destined for the American Legion convention? (OK, I've just donned my tinfoil slippers, too...)
Let's hope and pray that the authorities are on top of this. Stay alert folks. I fear that we're in for a very bumpy ride.

Don't know about legal but the way it was explained to me(by a Glock armorer)is each type of bullet has or could have a different point of impact which makes it more difficult for successive followup shot or shots to hit the target.
I know from experience that my pistol shoots every brand of ammunition a bit differently. Some much more than others.
Same thing with with all my firearms.
At Vandy Med Center? No way. Vanderbilt is my alma mater and the doctors at the med center won't do anything so blatant. Might make him eat the hospital food though.
Or...someone fire the headline writer.
Being muslim, he probably didn't have a dog with him. Lucky dog.
I prefer to alternate FMJ with expanding ammo. +P is a plus, of course. ;>)
Had they shot his dog, things would be different! :>)
