Yes, he was a klutz, and memorable, but this event in the skimmer was a one timer, as Kerry left the Danang division four days later for the division down in the Mekong river area, and it was also the last time that Schachte operated that mission.
Whai I see as a subtext in Lt Kerry's naval career is that he was constantly being "moved on, " not being kept in units as a helpful, efficient officer more likely would be.
I think the 'first' purple heart was awarded as a ticket out of the entire swift boat assignment, without it reflecting too negatively on his fitness reports. He got a 'promotion' to Admiral's aide. He did not last a full assignment there either.
Kerry reapplied in February I believe, after receiving his only real wound (the shrapnel in his thigh). He obviously got scared, because it only took him 22 days to get his 3 purple hearts and high tail it out of there at that point. People seem to be missing this.

I agree - I think it was part of the blackmail of Kerry in February 1969, to move him out - fellow officers said they would pass this along to give him the third PH...

That interview is a real killer for Kerry. Very credible gentleman.
Kerry claims that he was the Officer in Charge for the 1st Purple Heart incident, and also that there was hostile fire.
Note that for someone to be eligible for a Purple Heart, there must be hostile fire.
If there was hostile fire, the Officer in Charge must submit an after-action report. There is presently no after-action report on Kerry's website for this incident. If Kerry can't produce this report, that means there was no hostile fire during that incident, and that his 1st Purple Heart was fraudulently obtained.

This is the "Hot" button. Kerry, not some spokesman, should stand up on public TV and explain in detail how he got the PH after being denied by the commander of the mission and by his commanding officer ashore. Are there forged documents involved, like fake after action reports?
