[history]
It is increasingly depressing to contemplate the march of the (conservative) lemmings behind Bush as we advance, lurchingly, toward despotism, under the banner of "Compassionate Big-Governmentism"--or is it "Conservative Socialism"? Hard to tell.
Some of us remember Goldwater and Reagan -- and the amnesia about what they stood for -- and how far Bush has strayed from them -- invites despair. Reagan: abolish the federal department of education; Bush: more, more more! Goldwater loved the First Amendment; Bush signed 'McCain Feingold,' thinks the First Amendment needs even more containment ("get rid of those pesky 527s!).
By the way, for all the "social conservatives" who think Bush is one of us, may I point out he's not even 100% pro-life, as were Reagan, and (surprise!) his father (as VP and Pres; yes, it's true, he converted as Reagan's VP)? Bush talks a good game, but does the bare minimum; he leads no fights, and says he won't. (Reagan didn't either, more's the pity; but Reagan didn't have GOP control of Congress, either.) Pro-lifers place all their hopes on Bush's nominations to the courts. Well, we did that with Reagan and Bush Sr. -- when do we learn our lesson? Maybe lemmings never do.
Who thinks the gay-marriage amendment is Bush Jr's "flag burning" amendment -- i.e., red meat rhetoric substituting for meaningful action?
It's not that the government-expanding party is in power, that bothers me -- it's that it's all being done in the name of CONSERVATISM! It's all too Orwellian.
Is there a 12-step group for Recovering Republicans? Someone let me know, please.

You should see a doctor. Fast.
Could be a chemical imbalance in the brain, you know.
Who knows - maybe you can help find a cure for CLD (Chronic liberalism Disease.)
In the meantime, enjoy getting your ass flamed by the Viking Kitties.

LOL! We've all done it. I have to be very careful to cut and paste the dearly departed's name into a reply when their original post is removed.
On the other hand, it makes for an entertaining evening trying to sort out who said what to whom!

I had to look it up. Very good . . .
Septimus Severus
York based 3rd century Black Roman emperor
Septimus Severus was born at Leptus Magna in AD 146. He belonged to a class of Romanised Africans and received a good education in his native province. He first adopted an official career and became a civil magistrate, later he became a military commander, and this took him to Rome. He proved to be an able and popular military leader, and after the murder of Marcus Aurelius' son Commodes, Septimus, supported by the provincial legions, made good his claim to the imperial throne of Rome in AD193. He quickly defeated and killed Rome governor Clodius Albinus in a great battle in Lyon in France, and became emperor of Rome. He rebuilt and restored Hadrian's Wall and gave Britain a century of peace; throughout his life he never lost his taste for African cooking. When he first entered Britannia, he was welcomed and hailed as the deliverer from the Gauls and Germans who continually pillaged and ravaged the island. He quickly drove the aliens back across the English Channel, and gave Britannia semi-autonomous home rule status. In 208 AD, he supervised, refurbished, repaired and upgraded the mechanical defence system of Hadrian's Wall. In 211 AD, Septimus Severus died in York, of pneumonia at the age of 64.
