The Political Guns Of August Are Firing (Douglas Brinkley -- Christmas in Cambodia Not True)
Washington Post ^ | 08/28/04 | Ann Gerhart

---Snip---

The Kerry campaign has refused to release Kerry's personal Vietnam archive, including his journals and letters, saying that the senator is contractually bound to grant Brinkley exclusive access to the material. But Brinkley said this week the papers are the property of the senator and in his full control.

"I don't mind if John Kerry shows anybody anything," he said. "If he wants to let anybody in, that's his business. Go bug John Kerry, and leave me alone." The exclusivity agreement, he said, simply requires "that anybody quoting any of the material needs to cite my book."

---Snip---

Kerry repeatedly said in the past that he was ordered illegally into Cambodia during Christmas 1968. His detractors claim he never entered that country at all. In "Tour of Duty," Brinkley does not place Kerry in Cambodia but, quoting from Kerry's journal, notes that Kerry's Swift boat was "patrolling near the Cambodian line." Later in the book, Brinkley writes that Kerry and his fellow Swift boat operators "went on dropping Navy SEALS off along the Cambodian border."

"I'm under the impression that they were near the Cambodian border," said Brinkley, in the interview. So Kerry's statement about being in Cambodia at Christmas "is obviously wrong," he said. "It's a mongrel phrase he should never have uttered. I stick to my story."

Brinkley gambled that no one would ever read his boring little election-driven book. Wrongo, and now he's got egg on his face.

"LET'S GET THE AFTER ACTION REPORTS"

We also need to see all paperwork pertaining to medal awards. It now appears certain that sKerry was not under enemy fire during the first PH event. His commanding officer and the Dr. who treated his injury told him he didn't deserve a PH but somehow later he got one. The big question is HOW? Who signed a request for the PH, can an officer sign his own PH request? Or is it possible someone's name is forged to his PH request?

I think Kerry has some serious psychological problems.

I agree. He at least is comfortable with lying about important matters.

In the past, he has successfully used his Vietnam history and his Band of Brothers (tm) to silence anyone who questioned him.

The media is wholly to blame for permitting this fraud to continue. Not partly, WHOLLY. Some people have known, and could prove that Kerry was a fraud. The public was not given objective facts with which to draw its own conclusions.

The media is also wholly to blame for letting McGreevy slide for two years.

Slowly, bit by bit, the public is realizing how bad they have been had by this series of cons and manipulation. Once disenchanted, a person will NEVER believe the media again. Lost customer, forever.

He puts himself in the political center with Republican parents yet writes a fawning biography about the most liberal senator in the country....does'nt compute.

"At that point he should reach into his jacket and pull it out, walk it over to Kerry and hand it to him, reach into his pocket and produce a pen."

And produce his _own_ 180 and sign it. (I expect he already has, but why not do it again?)

He should name this book " A Step too far"

Good idea. Except the title should be "A medal too far"

"I'm talking a massive archive. I had to sit in his (Kerry's) house, with this woman watching me, and go through the collection -- 12-page letters, notebooks, journals. I made three different trips, and stayed there for days," said Brinkley, who also interviewed the senator for about 12 hours. The Kerry who emerged from the pages is sometimes painfully introspective, sometimes self-consciously aping the Lost Generation writers like Hemingway and Dos Passos whom he had studied at Yale. overwhelming and obnoxiously pretentious.

>>>snip<<<

"These days, Brinkley is acting a lot less like a historian and a lot more like a PR flack for John Kerry," wrote Boston Globe columnist Alex Beam. In its review, the New York Times referred to "the odor of salesmanship that lingers around 'Tour of Duty.' "

Brinkley will be a commentator for NBC during the RNC convention -- a "PR flack" indeed.

walk it over to Kerry and hand it to him,

bad idea.....This was shown to be a very spinnable action during the Hillary debate for Senate.

>>...is the MSM starting to turn on John Kerry?

I predicted they would, several months ago. Gut feeling, mostly. I'm really surprised the swift vets have gotten any traction at all, but then, Kerry screwed up by trying to suppress the book. MSM doesn't go for that sort of thing!

Other reasons: his support among libs is shallow, they really don't like him. And there's the Clintons, THEY really don't like him. And there's sheer perverse human nature, smelling blood in the water----the MSM don't like losers, don't want to back a loser, but if he's down and bleeding, they might as well look like heroes tearing him to pieces.

A "mongrel phrase" is one of uncertain origin, so it may be true but no one can say for sure. In Kerry's case, and in his own journal, he contradicts his himself, so we know the origin of all these accounts, they just don't match. "Lie" would be accurate, or at the least "conflicting accounts", but this guy can't bring himself to go there (which is why he was picked by Kerry to write his fictional history).
