I've read (sorry, can't remember where) that the shrapnel was so small ("the size of a quotation mark") that doctors decided that the incision to remove it would be so large that it might cause infection and they chose to leave it in. Do you or anyone else have info on the location of this factoid?

I remember that John's PRESENT DOCTOR said he reviewed the records and said John has a piece of schrapnel in his leg. But I DON'T REMEMBER the present Doc saying that he took an xray to confirm it. It would have been a pretty simple thing to do...so why didn't he do it?
