Attention SBC Yahoo! customers who use Windows XP Operating System
email | SBC/YAHOO

Posted on 08/18/2004 11:25:01 AM PDT by hsmomx3

Dear SBC Yahoo! Member:

If you are using the Windows XP Operating System on any of your computers connected to SBC Yahoo! Dial or SBC Yahoo! DSL, this courtesy message is for you. Users of other operating systems are not affected.

In August, Microsoft Corporation will be offering Windows XP users an update called "Service Pack 2". You may hear about the Service Pack 2 update in the news, on the Internet, or by seeing prompts on your computer screen telling you to load a "Critical Upgrade" to Windows.

Service Pack 2 provides a series of security enhancements for the Windows XP operating system. These new updates and features may cause SBC Yahoo! and other software on your computer to behave differently.

Based on our testing, SBC has determined that some users will experience changes after loading Service Pack 2 when using the customized SBC Yahoo! Browser, Parental Controls, SBC Yahoo! Web mail, and Instant Messenger. SBC and Yahoo! have prepared an update for these software components that you should load to ensure compatibility with Service Pack 2.

Please copy and paste the below URL into your browser to download the software update. http://download.yahoo.com/dl/sbcy/xpsp2fix.exe

In addition, if you are using a firewall on your XP computer, you will need to go to the firewall manufacturer's website and load any software updates they provide for Service Pack 2. Although we do not provide support for firewall software, you can find information and web-links for the major firewall companies at:

* Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com * Norton Personal Firewall: http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/ * McAfee Personal Firewall Plus: http://www.secureie.com/c/002/firewall2004/firewall2004_02.asp?source=goog&keyword=firewall&

If you experience changes with other software on your computer, check the software manufacturer's website for information regarding Service Pack 2 software updates.

Please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site, http://help.sbcglobal.net/ , for more details on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and SBC Yahoo! software updates that are available for your computer.

If you want to know more about the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update, please refer to the Microsoft site at http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2 or call 1.888.SP2.HELP (1.888.772.4357). If you need additional help with SBC Yahoo!, please refer to the SBC Yahoo! Help Site at http://help.sbcglobal.net

Sincerely, SBC Yahoo! Member Services

I received the same message but have not attempted to download the MSN update or related ones yet. Do you know what the pros and cons are for the MSN SP update? Not sure I even want to go down that road.

A little advice on service packs, never install one or download one within the first month of it being out. let some other poor sod be Bill Gate's beta tester.

SBC sucks ass.

I wanted DSL. I asked if I could get DSL in my city. They said Oh, yeah I just did the tests and your number fits for service. Sweet!

I was pumped up ready to get rid of dial up. I had to switch my current phone service which was fine. I got my package of wireless modem stuff in the mail. I hooked it all up. Well 15 or so days went by and still no service. I was on the phone every three days. Customer service was always nice though.

Well on the last day a SBC field tech called and told me that DSL service was not available in my area. I was too far away for service. I was pissed. They over sold and under delivered.

I am now going back to my old phone service. Well I have to have the DSL codes taken off my line for my new phone service. I have been waiting for three weeks for them to do this. I had to call back today for another removal.

The phone company I want to use says they have at least thirty customers in the same position as me. Most times they have to call the FCC to force SBC to have the codes removed. This is BS.

So I hope all who use SBC never plan to leave them.

And no I don't have the update. :)

Most reports I've seen say that SP2 hasn't affected anything. There are, of course, the programs Microsoft lists, but many have already been patched.

My suggestion... wait a couple of months before upgrading. It's an important upgrade, and shouldn't be ignored. The software problems come on the part the software companies themselves, not Microsoft. However, I'd wait for an SP2a or similar update. If you have a firewall and an antivirus program, you're already doing your part.

Thanks! I knew there was a good reason why I haven't jumped on this. Too many of my programs are on those lists.

I got the above email today.

My XP Pro system is working pretty darn OK right now, so I am going to wait for the dust to settle on this one. In my experience w/Micro$oft, I have found that if you are writing code for their OS and an upgrade breaks your application, then you need to update your application. They are always right. Once everyone understands that things will go a lot smoother.

So, I will await WinXP SP3 until I patch my system.

There are alternatives, you know...

Gotta love Microsoft. It amazes me how many people stick by such a lousy operating system.

I am playing devil's advocate here.

Is SP2 mandatory? And if someone just uses their computer for word processing, faxing, surfing the internet but NO downloading or opening of email attachments, then is SP2 necessary?

Yup. I think people and businesses are just too heavily invested in it to give it up. That and most of the major apps are written for Win and Mac only. Until they start writing for Linux too nothing will change.

SP2 necessary?

Not now, but as time goes on it probably will be. You'll know when, cause stuff won't work without it. OR if you're sloppy about security you might want it sooner.

I have been using SP2 since Release Candidate 2 and have had absolutely no problems with it.

YMMV.
