"Indeed, there is a strong current of Christian thought that emphasizes original sin, the depravity of man. It has been more prominent, however, since the holocaust, and usually is considered a feature of neo-orthodoxy"
This is an unfactual statement. Church History shows that the sinfulness of all men has been known, understood, emphasized, hidden from in denial, but the absolute basis of the need for God to rescue us. From the first pair of brothers, and Cain killing Abel, to this very week's news stories and our own consciences if we would but listen, the depravity of man is "a feature" of life.
Yesterday Fox reported that Scott Peterson's favorite movie, according to Amber Frey, was the Shining, with Jack Nicholson violently attacking his wife.
I was about to write a piece on this, when Fox reported a man had pled guilty to killing his wife after watching the movie, "The Passion", saying it had just moved him too much.
The worst that Hollywood can put out, and the best than a God-fearing man can produce, yet the same results. Why?
We are not built for violence, to give it or receive it. It is horrific to us, until we squash our consciences long enough and hard enough. We are supposed to be abhorred at what Christ went through for us. Scott Peterson was supposed to be repulsed by the thought of hurting his wife and child, and never act out the movie.
If, however, by meditating on the meaning of the violence, we find worth and value, then what do we do? It certainly is of worth and value that the willing suffering and death of Christ atoned for the sins of the world, all of us alienated from a relationship with God. The suffering was violent, as we saw, but it had a greater, redemptive purpose.
Scott Peterson's rationale had no worth or value, except to his twisted mind. Worth and value are OBjective, not SUBjective. We can only know right from wrong if we have Someone outside of our murky thinking explain it to us. It is right to "not covet." How many of us would have thought by ourselves, that it's wrong to just want something which is someone else's?
"Thou shalt not murder." Having it senselessly glorified as in 'The Shining' is wrong. But it's a big categorical distinction,in the death of Jesus Christ. The Creator Himself, gives His life willingly, as a substitute and representative in our place, so that we don't have to have the violence justly given us as our punishment. "The Passion" portrays this love. The graphic detail shows the depth of love. God did not have to do this for us. He would have been just to abandon us in our rebellion. But He is not only just, He is love. It IS good to focus on this actual historical event, and our reaction is not to be go out and kill someone! We are instead to remember also His resurrection, and put to death our own desires to rebel against Him anymore, and submit to His forgiveness and Lordship.
Good chances that should an adolescent be shuttled back and forth to Foster Homes at least five times, its a charm to produce a psychopath.
What do you make of Amber Frey and her two out of wedlock children, a message therapist and baby talking to Psycho-Scott.
Often bad things do happen to bad people who make bad friends their lovers.
