When does criminal activity (drug running, etc.) turn into a terrorist action (declaring "war" on police)?

The common theme is anarchy. They see the terrorists doing it and note that they are not receiving universal condemnation. In fact some folks, among them a "movie" maker and some members of congress, are lauding their behavior. They see the "anti-globalism" demonstrators acting up, suffering no consequences, and receiving praise in some quarters, so they decide they can get away with it.

"Gangs targeting cops" was a common theme in the 60's during a similar period of division in our country. Feral people are always seeking weakness to take advantage of.

Same old, same old.

More like Al McCauliffe...

Sounds like a quagmire and a shooting gallery to me. McGreevy should pull the police out of Newark and negotiate with the "Bloods". This demands a more sensitive approach. Maybe Kofi Annan can help.

Tom Chittum is the author of the book Civil War II. His thesis is that true nations are monocultural and empires are multicultural. Over time multicultural empires must resort to more and more violence and games to keep the various ethnic, national and religious groups from going at it. Eventually they all break down into civil war. Examples include Yugoslavia, ancient Rome and South Africa. He believes the USA has passed the point of no return and will end up in civil war. He sites many reasons for his further thesis that this will inevitably break down on racial lines (ie: Azatlan). It is probably fair to say that he's a racist (he's from Rhodesia and perhaps has his reasons), but his book is not a white supremisist screed. One of the appendix's of the book lists "warning signs of the breakdown". It was posted on FR a whlie ago but removed. I don't think the moderators want Chittum stuff here and I respect that. While I can not agree with aspects of the authors philosophy I still found it an interesting book.

Re your #18 -

I was just wondering how many of these gang-bangers had converted to TROP while incarcerated.

That would be an interesting coincidence, wouldn't it?

It seems that American prisons are one of Islam - and ElQuida's - most fertile recruiting grounds.

Such an alliance would not surprise me, particularly.

I heard it on FOX two weeks ago... then no more... guess they didn't want to encourage this by advertising it on the national news -- or spread it like the news did the riots in the 70's.

In response, the State Police will host a meeting Monday to discuss the threat with local police officials, including those from cities where the threat seems to be focused: Paterson, Newark, Jersey City, Passaic, East Orange, Irvington, Camden and Trenton.

I am well acquainted with most of the towns mentioned above (I've never been to Camden). As hard as it may be for some to imagine, moving to Irvington was once a big step up for people moving out of Newark. My dads relatives that did just that were better off staying in Downneck.

I understand East Orange was once a nice place as well. Its kinda spooky to walk around Uppsala's old campus, as it has been closed for years but remains intact.

We have the Bloods and Crips here in Seattle too, but thankfully 1. they are on the other side of town and 2. Washington state allows concealed carry for us law abiding citizens.

...and if they beat the cops, they get to tend with the National Guard, who have a lot more firepower and a lot fewer reasons not to shoot to kill.

During the Newark Riots in 1967, there was no communication between the cops and the National Guard. As a result, they spent more time shooting at eachother than at rioters.

There were a few other interesting tidbits from that Riot. La Cosa Nostra put out word to the black community that if they set foot in certain sections of the city they would not receive the same mercy that the Guard or the Police would provide. Also, many cops were incensed that the rioters left alone stores with "Soul Brother Owned" signs in them, so they shot the windows themselves. Unbenownst to both cops and rioters was the fact that many of the owners of these stores were actually white and tried to pass themselves off as black owned businesses to prevent looting.

Brick City Brims

They have a chapter in Linden where my Aunt lives. Their graffitti is all over the Linden/Roselle train station.

Given that my hubby works for Prudential in Newark, I can't imagine now having another thing to worry about. All those police concentrated in one area.......

E. Orange is full of nice victorian homes; it's too bad the town fell by the wayside.

The area around prudential is probably the safest place in town with all police stationed there.

Old friend, what was the reaction of the employees after what they had heard on the news last weekend about Prudential, were there any rumors prior to the newsbreak or was this a total surprise?

There were NO rumors.

Many of the employees were frightened to death.

By the end of the week everyone had returned to work.

It's long overdue - to deal with these criminals..

They are wolves within our society..

Our society is under assault from too many enemies -- to cut these domestic bastards any slack at all...
They should be hunted down and killed like dogs.

They are no better than terrorists in our society - living off crime.

It's a shame we have to live like this.

CitiCorp just announced they are moving to Warren County because of the fear of working in or near NYC.

To me the worst part is when ba$tard$ like Richard Clarke this morning state that President Bush has no credibility.

Instead of this country pulling together to protect and defend our fellow citizens, we have a large portion of the country wishing for disaster to befall us.

This Citi-Group move has long been in the works. They are moving approx. 650 people in a consolidation move to the Lucent facility in Warren TOWNSHIP.

They are moving employees from several locations, not just New York.
