derived from castor beans.

Wasn't there a story a few months ago about ricin being in the main U.S. Senate building, and then later on it turned out to be not the case after all? I sure hope this turns out the same way.

"On June 16th, a man called police in Irvine to report he found a note inside a jar of baby food warning that the container had been contaminated."

Seems to be a person who wants to make a point about the vulnerability of our food supply!

BTW ... The positive results for poison can be from a plain raw castor bean a LEGAL plant in the USA.

Baby Food in Calif. Contained Poison

ASSOCIATED PRESS

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Trace amounts of the deadly poison ricin have been found in at least one jar of baby food that had been tampered with, the FBI said Wednesday.

The FBI and prosecutors are investigating two suspected cases of food tampering. No injuries or arrests have been reported, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Authorities have not disclosed the amount of ricin discovered, the number of baby food jars that contained the poison or a possible motive.

On June 16, a man told Irvine police that as he was about to feed his son, he found a note inside a jar of baby food warning that it had been contaminated. A similar case was reported by an Irvine couple on May 31 involving the same baby food, Gerber Banana Yogurt, police said. A note was also found inside that jar.

Investigators were testing Gerber Banana Yogurt removed from the store where both jars were purchased. They did not specify whether the ricin was found in both jars.

Authorities did not disclose the contents of the notes but said they referred to an Irvine police officer.

Ricin is made from castor beans and can be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or injected. A dose about the size of the head of a pin could be enough to kill an adult, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I heard this on a newsbreak ABC Radio, given the station I was listening to.

Anyway, the brief news brief didn't say "product tampering" until the last line.

Brian Levin is a professor of criminal justice at Cal State San Bernardino, where he is part of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism.

(Could be another kook.)

Levin, who has testified before Congress on the applications of ricin and has written a book called "The Limits of Dissent," said ricin -- usually in powder form -- can be fatal if inhaled or if allowed to come in contact with the skin.

He said it "shuts down the myochondrial functions of the (human) cell," and that death is "very painful" and occurs over the course of a couple of weeks.

After a few weeks of ingestion by a baby's tiny system, I dare say it would kill the little one.

Okay, the article says "non-lethal" amounts of ricin. And since ricin is incredibly toxic, it must be *very* trace amounts of ricin in the jars -- if any (when testing for trace amounts of chemicals, it's easy to get false positives).

I'll bet $20 that what we have here is some jerk wanting to either cause a commotion, or "call attention to" our vulnerability, so he puts notes (AND NOTHING ELSE) into a few baby food jars, either at the plant or at the store.

Consumers buy the jars, read the notes, notify authorites, and the authorities run a million tests on the on the baby food, including ones for ricin, which either turn up a false positive for trace amounts on the one jar and everyone freaks, or it detects a real but harmless trace amount which got there through any number of means, since ricin is present in many plant products naturally anyway. End result is still "everybody freaks".

Who's going to take me up on the $20 bet?

Isn't the timing of the ricin in the baby food suspect. I think the Republicans may have done it. It's Bush's fault. He wants to kill babies in order to get re-selected.

Just wait for the spin.

FBI: Baby Food in Calif. Contained Poison
FBI Says Tampered Baby Food in California Contained Trace Amounts of Deadly, Poisonous Ricin

The Associated Press

IRVINE, Calif. July 28, 2004 — Authorities found ground-up castor beans with trace amounts of the poison ricin in two jars of baby food that had been tampered with, officials said Wednesday.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials who tested the baby food said the ricin was not in the purified form that can be deadly. Rather, it was a less toxic, natural component of the castor beans.

"It's unlikely there would be serious injury with the level of castor bean found in those two jars we tested," said Dr. David Acheson, chief medical officer with the FDA's Center for Food, Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Small amounts of the food was eaten, but the babies had no symptoms, he said.

The FBI and Orange County District Attorney's Office were investigating the discoveries as cases of food tampering. No injuries or arrests have been reported, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive. In Washington, two federal law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity because of agency policy said there was no evidence of any widespread ricin contamination of baby food.

Ricin is made from castor beans and can be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or injected. A dose about the size of the head of a pin could be enough to kill an adult, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Authorities did not disclose the contents of the notes but said they referred to an Irvine police officer.

The Gerber Products Co., based in Parsippany, N.J., is working with investigators. Authorities told the company the contamination "absolutely" occurred after the food was manufactured, said Gerber spokeswoman Terry Boylan.

Gerber baby food jars are vacuum sealed and should pop when opened. If they don't, it could indicate they have been tampered with, Boylan said.

The FBI still is trying to determine how ricin turned up in a U.S. Senate mailroom. The Feb. 2 discovery led to the shutdown of three Senate office buildings for several days and forced some staff and police to undergo decontamination procedures.

Also still unsolved are two letters found last year in postal facilities that contained vials of ricin and were signed by a mysterious "Fallen Angel," who objected to new government rules for longhaul truckers. One of those letters was addressed to the White House and was intercepted by the Secret Service.

Associated Press Writer Curt Anderson contributed to this report.

reminds me of the Tom Alberg case a while back. Here's something I noted in a thread on Alberg:

To: Fitzcarraldo; prisoner6 From Fitzcarraldo's article: [on Seattle Alberg case]

Also found were clear jars with black lids containing material that is consistent with processed castor seeds. The jars were labeled "caution ricin poison."

Notice the same exact English usage in the individual who labeled the mailed ricin :

OCTOBER 15 + NOVEMBER 6, 2003 : (MAIL FACILITIES SERVING GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG AIRPORT & THE WHITE HOUSE DISCOVER LETTERS SIGNED "FALLEN ANGEL" CONTAINING THE TOXIN RICIN) .a mysterious "Fallen Angel" who sent two threatening letters containing ricin. ...typewritten letters addressed to the White House and Transportation Department warned that more ricin would be used unless new federal trucking regulations were scrapped. The change in 60-year-old rules governing how often truck drivers must rest [will go into] effect January 4.[2004] ...letters signed "Fallen Angel." Those letters were discovered in mail facilities that serve the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina and the White House. They were found October 15 and November 6, respectively, though the existence of the White House letter was not disclosed by the Bush administration until Tuesday [Feb 3, 2004]. The letters, described as nearly identical, claimed that the author owned a tanker truck fleet company and demanded that hours of service rules for drivers remain unchanged, according to the FBI. The FBI said the South Carolina letter was contained in an envelope with a typewritten warning "Caution RICIN POISON."
The letter included claims that the author could make much more ricin and would "start dumping" if the new regulations weren't abolished. The envelope contained no delivery address and no postmark. No one has fallen ill as a result of any of the letters. Ricin is a highly toxic substance that is relatively easy to make from castor beans. There is no known antidote but ricin is considered a less effective weapon for causing mass casualties than anthrax, which was mailed to Senate offices in late 2001, because it is more difficult to make airborne and requires inhalation of large quantities to be fatal. - "'Fallen Angel' letters focus of ricin probeAuthor threatens to make ricin and 'start dumping' it," CNN ,Thursday, February 5, 2004

So how does this work so that no Muslim babies are killed? Culturally do Muslims never buy baby food? We should probably be on the look out for anything that Muslims culturally just don't eat. Pork products come to mind and I'm sure there are many others. I was afraid this might happen. Can any food be trusted anymore? I drink distilled water that I make myself, but I still have to go to the market for everything else. Scary stuff. I wonder if this story will be minimized by the government to prevent a panic?
