I first heard that one in the 70s from feminists yapping about "the patriarchy" and its evil ways. I have never heard it come out of the mouth of anyone who wasn't a leftist. The suggestion that it is of Quaker origin is new to me, but quite plausible. I have known and observed many Quakers, in both the U.S. and Canada, and I personally rate them somewhere between Communists and pedophiles.

Ever been in a group where someone will throw out a totally meaningless phrase and most of the others will nod or get the deer-in-the-headlights look?
Well, there is usually one person in the group who will say "Huh? that makes no sense!" or" "I don't understand that."
Most normal people are so afraid to appear ignorant that they play into the demagogues hands. But to rely on this technique is the surest sign of intellectual bankrupcy.
"Speaking truth to power" is what you SAY, when you have to LIE to the people who, if you fool them, can put you back in power.
It means, "We'll determine for you what the truth is after we're back in power."
It's just one of those feel good, meaningless, catch phrases the left is so enamoured of, the kind that roll off the tongue like water after they've taken a half dozen bong hits and listened to Rage Against the Machine for a couple of hours in a Berkeley dorm...
