Exodus a sign of problems at Ithaca High School (Liberal Principals won't discipline students)
Ithaca Journal | Local News - Saturday, July 24, 2004 | ANNE JU

ITHACA--According to the Ithaca Journal (which cannot be reposted here thanks to the cretins at Gannett news), Ithaca teachers are leaving the school system due to the liberal administration's failure to discipline students who commit disruptive, or even violent, acts:

...teachers feel unsupported by the central and school administrations when it comes to meting out punishment to students who are disruptive, disrespectful, use profanity in class, or in some cases, physically assault an authority figure.

"The discipline system needs to be more consistent," said Seifert, who teaches in the math department.

One particular incident in September was especially traumatizing, Seifert said.

In breaking up a fight between several students in the hallway, one of the students shoved her with both hands, and the other student punched another teacher in the back of the neck, according to Seifert.

The student who pushed Seifert was sent back to class. The next day, the student who punched the other teacher was back in school. Only after prodding by both Seifert and the other teacher, the two students were suspended for two days.

A number of teachers besides Seifert had long-standing frustrations with regard to student discipline, including Tom Mariano, who served as math department chairman.

"If in a given situation, a teacher's story doesn't match the student's, all things being equal, the administration will err on the side of the student," Mariano said.

Of course unruly students should not be punished. One needs to look at the root causes and the capitalistic, patriarchal, homophobic society led by the evil ogre Bush that made them that way.

Liberals make for lousy parents...and school administrators, too, it seems.

I lived in the City of Evil for about 5 years, in the 70s.

I never EVER EVER recall hearing about ANY violence in the local schools.

I am so glad that after decades of liberal ministrations, they are now up to NYC standards.

Maybe the "repeat offenders" should have the police called on them for fighting in the schools. They wouldn't get away with it on the streets - why get a pass at school?

Stories like this are just the tip of the Public education iceberg. The system is totally broken. Please... everybody, get your kids out of public schools and into private schools that will teach your religion, or at least morality and ethics.

Thats where your wrong. In Ithaca, they do get away with it on the streets. Especially if they are a minority, or engaged in a left wing cause. Its AOK in Ithaca to throw blood all over a military recruiting office or engage in graffiti calling Bush a Nazi or Hitler, or to even attack a white person. Ask BLL about it.

About 20 years ago, when I first heard of "home schooling" as a movement
I thought it was an radical, misguided notion.

Now I see how the proponents of home-schooling (and private schools) were just
ahead of the curve.

Solution: Form an ad hoc committee to study the problem, analyze surveys, and make recommendations.

Absolutely. I personally am not a huge fan of home schooling, as it is not very efficient and I don't think that the kids get enough social contact with their peers. However, it's still better than Public schools. I think that Home-schoolers should start to pool their resources and start small, possibly home-run private schools that would cost less than ordinary private schools.

I don't know if this is an example of that model, but I do hear commercials on radio about
The California Virtual Academies. William Bennett and some other "heavy hitters" are
associated with this venture.

Do you know of any facts/figures on how many people are opting out of public education for religious, private, or homeschooling?... or how the percentages are changing?
