We have to try. We face opponents at home who refuse to follow any principles at all. The old, time-honored ideas that preserved and bouyed our nation though the difficult days between the revolution and the war between the states are ignored.
The left uses these ideas to destroy us.
The right, knowing this, tries to rewrite history. We are vulnerable to those demagogues who would dismiss these principles out of convenience.
We must establish a new era of tolerance and religious freedom based on a fierce sense of duty to principles. We must be ruthless in ensuring that the ideals on which our nation is founded are protected. Every element of the bill of rights should burn in our eyes like coals. These are the things almost a million men have died to preserve. These are what give us freedom and prosperity.
They are too precious to be flung away by fearful men who quake when the unprincipled titter and bark like dogs.
We will be free, and we will be principled. One without the other leads to the loss of both.
