Convicted murderer Andrea Yates hospitalized (why not take a nice hot bath instead Andrea?)
Associated Press ^ | Wednesday, July 21, 2004

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Andrea Yates, who is serving a life sentence for drowning her children in a bathtub three years ago, has been hospitalized because she is refusing to eat, her attorney said Tuesday night.

Her condition was unclear, attorney George Parnham told The Associated Press late Tuesday. He said he tried but was unable to visit with his client Tuesday because she wasn't coherent.

"There is apparently a determination within her that wants to put an end to this," Parnham said. "I'm not sure what type of psychiatric medications can offset the reality of what occurred and make her feel better about that."

Prison spokesman Mike Viesca said Yates was transported from the Skyview Unit to a hospital in Galveston Monday night. He said he could give no other details.

Clearly Andrea Yates is a victim of society's demand that women look as slim as the models in all the movies and magazines. She's clearly the victim here.

Therefore, she should be freed.

Nope. If she wants the death penalty, and she has to do it herself, so be it.

EggsAckley.

But, she should feel very bad about it, for the full extent of her sentence.

Absolutely no "sane" person can kill her children - especially the way she did. I'm not saying let her go. These crimes are still crimes, no matter what kind of insane mind commits them, but Andrea Yates, was, is and always will be a tortured soul, till the day she dies. That is not funny. She's doing her time.

How come when men kill their wives, girlfriends, and or children they aren't pitied like this evil Yates woman? They are always seen as bad, domineering, controlling, and possessive but never as sad pitiful people.

If it's okay for Andrea to kill 5 little children then what's wrong with OJ or Scott Peterson killing out of the same reasons?

Gee, if she was in Florida there wouldn't be a problem.

Seriously, she finally realizes exactly what she did and quite rightly wants to die. Medication won't help her nightmare.

Demon possessed.

Amen to both comments.

Luke 4:16-21
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

May she be delivered. That does NOT imply released from prison, just the spirit oppressing her.

I have some compassion for her too. I think she snapped with all the pressure coming at her. No one is made out of stone, but usually someone kills themselves when they crack, not their kids.

I'd like to investigate their "spiritual advisor". It's that kind of religious extremism that can be a psychological disaster for certain personality types. The burden of Andrea and Rusty Yates beliefs fell on her. Even hard line Catholics (I was raised in that kind of enviroment) have an escape clause for the use of birth control. Why couldn't Rusty have kept his pants on, or listened to all the doctors and used birth control?

I wonder if she was pregnant again. Published information said no, but we know that you can't believe everything you read. Another pregnancy could have been the catalyst. A forced abortion would have made things even worse for mental stability. I'm just speculating, of course.

I'm sure people will flame. Who cares :-)

"Absolutely no "sane" person can kill her children - especially the way she did."

Correction: YOU couldn't kill your childeren--her way or any other way.

I'd guess that you have no experience with the self absorbed and the self pitying types who are perfectly sane and capable of anything.

When I was a kid I read a book that was years over my head in which a bartender said "...the self pity-ers...they're the most dangerous..."

At the age I was then my concept of "self pity" was a pouty kid saying 'nobody loves me'.

Now, at 45 years of age, I, unfortunatley, know all to well what the author of that book knew.

They ARE very dangerous and they ARE capable of ANYTHING.

There were warning signs that there was a problem before she killed her children. She had severe post-pardom depression, and then her husband got her pregnant again.

She is certainly guilty, but her husband is partially to blame.

He also left his children with a woman that was not doing well. Why did they homeschool their children if she was having mental problems?

He got off scott free and she is paying the price. I personally think that something should have been done to him also.

If we were talking about Susan Smith, I might actually agree with you. Check out my post above for some insight. She's already gone, mentally. Torturing her isn't going to do anything.

In case you are unfamiliar with Susan Smith, let me fill you in. She was commiting adultery with a man who didn't want to have her two little boys around. She strapped her babies into cars seat, then drove her car into a lake. Next she told authorities that she had been carjacked by a black male. I remember the press conference where she and her husband tearfully begged the "carjacker" to release the babies. There was even a composite sketch of the "perpetrator".

She has allegedly had sex with guards and offered up a pic on an internet site that matches idiots with inmates.

There is a difference. Yes children are dead, but you have to look at the big picture. Susan Smith is a sociopathic monster, imo. Andrea Yates is pathetic and brain damaged. May God have mercy on her soul.

Sometimes I wonder if he drove her to do it. There are some missing pieces to this story. Why didn't the most recent doctors treating Andrea report the situation to the authorities? In this case it certainly was warranted.

What about that hokey minister? He ordered them to live in a converted school bus years before they bought the house. I think both he and Rusty have some issues. There are a lot of dangerous people out there using God's name for their own purposes.

Rusty Yates gave some real shaky interviews. At the first one, I figured he was griefstricken. The second one, I was disgusted, and the one where he said he wanted to remarry and have more kids left me shocked. I think he should have been charged with at least criminal neglect. Some time in jail might have wiped that happy smile off his face.

Her murders were such an act of rage that it is incomprehensible to me how she can have any defenders at all.

She killed her kids one by one in the hour in which she knew she would not be disturbed or interrupted. (Apparently, when God told her to kill them he kept her acutely aware of such minor details.)

If anyone can prove that she thought she was screwing in a light bulb while she was murdering her kids, I'll accept the insanity defense. And how kind of her to slaughter them all right before the eldest who understood all. If she had a truly remorseful bone in her body, she'd be begging to be executed!

Even hell won't hold the likes of her.

Then what about women whose husbands or boyfriends are abusive control freaks who go ahead and have another baby with him and then he waits for her to go off to work and kills every child one by one? Would you say that woman should be sent to prison too because she was partly to blame? It's a double standard --- men who violently and cruelly murder their children are viewed differently from women who do exactly the same.

If Rusty was so bad --- why didn't Andrea kill him? She picked on her defenseless children because she is one cruel heartless beast.

Do you have all this same compassion for OJ's suffering? Or for Scott Peterson or other men who have murdered members of their families? Do you think Scott Peterson isn't suffering equally with Andrea Yates? All except OJ are locked away and I'm sure Andrea will be freed soon, all show nothing but a lot of self-absorbtion and no remorse except sometimes for some self-pity they hope to gain. If OJ had killed his helpless children instead his ex-wife and her lover (maybe even to punish Nicole) --- would that have made everything different?

Nobody likes to see humans suffer????? Andrea certainly did herself --- chasing down her own terrified children, holding them under water while they struggled and finally drowned ---- not just one but 5 little babies. She certainly did enjoy seeing and making them suffer --- her oldest even had to witness her drown his little sister and knew she would do the same to him. Why did she want to see them suffer? Her answer was because they weren't perfect children.

I bathed my Keeshond in the bathtub today and as the dog squirmed a bit, I remembered the adorable Yates children, who must have put up a much stronger fight. Their terrified kicking and screaming would have snapped anyone out of madness; I believe Mrs. Yates drowned her children intentionally. Jail is where she belongs, a dark and dismal cell preferably with leaking plumbing.

Everyone should check out that link. Thanks for posting it, so I could refresh my memory.

I've read articles where "experts" try and explain where certain types of sociopathy originate. Her father's suicide and sexual abuse from her stepfather are strong indicators. She certainly behaved perfectly in high school. Ooops, talking about Susan Smith, not Andrea Yates. We can see by her behavior that she has boundary problems brought on by her step father, and even her mother's behavior upon learning about the abuse. Part of her psyche died. These people are very dangerous to be around. I hope she never gets out of prison.

Imo, that still doesn't make her mentally ill in the sense that Andrea is. I read the excerpts of an interview between Andrea and an "unidentified male". This was religious delusion coupled with psychosis. I'm a traditional type woman...to a point. I think that a woman should stay home when there are children, and the man should be the breadwinner. Not every situation is the same. This is 2004, and you have to do what is right in your own situation. There is no shame in contacting social services for help. I wish Rusty Yates had done that.

I'm glad to see that Rusty is aware of the poor choice of religious advice that he and his wife received. His chatty tone with Larry King was unsettling. David Smith on the other hand, will always have a huge hole in his heart. I hope he is able to keep Susan behind bars for the rest of her life. May his children give him much needed comfort.
